Insurance?
Who do you have your scooter insured with and what kind of premiums do you pay?

I have it through Horace Mann. They do insurance for teachers and my mother is one. Full coverage. 42/mo. $500 deductable. '08 Buddy.
Liability alone was going to be $106/yr but I work at a mall right now so I went with full coverage until I start law school and don't leave my scooter parked outside a mall for 9hours straight.

I have my 2008 Buddy 125cc insured with Markel American Insurance Company, which specializes in motorcycles, boats, ATVs etc.
I pay 155.00 per year for full coverage with a $500.00 deductible. Other quotes I received from Progressive, Geico, Farmers ranged from 400.00/year to 800.00 per year. My decision to go with Markel was a no-brainer.

Your best bet, especially if you live in the city in CA, is to spend a lot of time shopping around.
Location plays a big factor in how much you're quoted. The insurance companies will deny it, but I also think gender is sometimes a factor. And then there's this giant Wheel o' Rates they spin...
I know of few people in L.A. paying less than $200 or so for liability with any company. But (for example) when I started trying to get quotes to insure my wife, they were as high as $900 for the same kind of coverage I had. The quote I'd gotten 2 years earlier, when I had no experience, a permit, and was the same age as she was when I tried to get her quote: about $240.
It pays—a lot—to shop around. If your auto insurer does motorcycle coverage or if you have home or renter's insurance, try them first. You may be able to get a deal.

I don't have a scoot (bought a small displacement moto instead) but I picked up Progressive insurance today and it was $128 for a year.
This is on a 1971 Yamaha CS3B 200cc Two Stroke street bike.
$50/100k uninsured/underinsured
$100/$300/$50k liability
$5k/person medical payments.
I went with liability only as I only have $1000 in the bike. I have two tickets on my license to, so I thought $128/yr wasn't bad. I was paying $400+ a year on my old '75 CB750k for the same coverage.
Chris.

I don't have any insurance on any of my bikes except my motorcycle. It is $475 a year full coverage. I decided to go naked on the scooters and self insure. If I get whacked, there won't be that much damage to the other vehicle and my estate can take care of it. I do have an excellent medical plan where I work and took that into consideration.

I pay $79/year with a $200 deductible with Progressive. I only use them for my scooter insurance. My auto insurer (Liberty Mutual) wanted over $200/year, so it does pay to shop around. I like Progressive 'cos you can do everything online and never talk to a person.

I'm with State Farm, paying about $13/month with full injury/property liability coverage, an additional medical payments coverage, $50 deductible comprehensive, $250 deductible collision, plus uninsured motorist, etc.

OK for all of you that are paying less than $500 a year. What are you selecting for usage: commuting or pleasure.
I just got 2 quotes with usage as commuting:
Progressive - $786 / yr
Gieco - $1255 / yr
I set up coverage similar to OG.

The only thing in my policy that comes close is this:
The way I see it, that "occasional use" is my loophole should something happen.LAY-UP ENDORSEMENT
Bodily Injury, Property Damage, Medical Payments, Passenger Liability, Uninsured Motorists and Collision WILL NOT APPLY (except for occasional use) to the vehicle described in the Declarations during the months of December, January and February of the policy period.

I selected "pleasure" because I also have a cage which would be considered my daily driver.

When shopping for rates, consider going outside the major players. You may need to get a dozen quotes before deciding. Also call to get quotes instead of relying on online quotes. Often, having a person who's invested in selling you a policy means that they will get you a lower rate. The online calculator won't. Finally, if you can't get something affordable, try an insurance broker.

I've tried to get a quote with Progressive (as well as Geico), and they don't seem to have Genuine in their database(s). I think I'll have to call and actually speak to a human being....siobhan wrote:I pay $79/year with a $200 deductible with Progressive. I only use them for my scooter insurance. A lot of people have Geico or Progressive, so someone there knows what a Genuine is. Thing is, on some states, they don't actually provide insurance, they just act as an agent for another company which does. If they don't have Genuine in their database, make sure they know the MSRP of the scoot. i've had agents try to classify it as a Vespa and I was like, "Uh, yeah kinda like that but a couple grand less to replace!"gymnation wrote:I've tried to get a quote with Progressive (as well as Geico), and they don't seem to have Genuine in their database(s). Me, I'm going to a broker soon to consolidate as much of my insurance as possible. This may not make sense for everyone, but if you have home, multiple autos and multiple scooters as we do, there could be a lot of advantage to seeing if we can get some deals.
