I'm proud to say I've now seen my FIRST GATOR IN THE WILD!
This is why it is worth driving the backroads folks! In one day I saw a gator, herons everywhere, a boar, and the Gulf of Mexico. Oh, and I ran out of gas, but who cares, I SAW A GATOR.
I was on the Creole Nature Trail, through Cameron, Louisiana. I told all the locals fishing that it was coming their way and they just laughed.
The Trail ends with a ferry ride over to Pleasure Island and a long desolate drive along the Gulf Of Mexico, but further from you, this is near the Mississippi River, so the water was more brown.
Did I mention the boar? Or the massive snake? One of my favorite rides so far.
Seriously, I've seen bats, racoons, opossum and skunk. Ok, so you guys living in the sticks are saying so what, them thars common as ticks on a flea...or was that fleas on a dog...oh never mind. Remember, these are sightings in San Francisco...
Heh. It's a server error. If you post and get a message saying something about a debug or mail error, chances are it submitted your post. No need to go back and re-submit it.

I used to see coyotes all the time in Griffith Park here in L.A. My wife was convinced a pack of them, or maybe one of the rare mountain lions, was going to come after me one morning. For me, it's kind of cool that we have that kind of wildlife in the middle of the city.

When I was in Glendale I remember the coyotes coming down from the hills at night and laying into peoples garbage cans and even heard stories of peoples dogs and cats coming up missing.

Wildlife in the middle of the city? You want to talk about wildlife, I was at a local pub the other day and saw this lady who must have been at least 6'5" with green hair holding on to this gigantic....oh wait...we're talking about animals and things aren't we? Ok, never mind...
Oh yeah, and thanks for fixing my double posts...that I didn't repost, it just sorta did it on it's own. Might be my computer...
I've seen three beavers (the critters, you dirty-minded scooterists!) in the last six months. They were dead, having lost out to cages, but this is Oklahoma. I lived here most of my life and have never seen any in the wild, let alone in the area right around Tulsa.

Yes, that is my scooter.
Yes, I wear a helmet and a FIRSTGEAR armored jacket.
No, I'm not embarrassed to be seen riding it.
Yes, that is an NRA sticker on the fender.
Driving an old, small Dodge Colt, one time we came around a hill in Cape Briton N.S. only to end up face to face with a giant angry momma Caribou.
She absolutely refused to budge, and we had to (nervously) back down the hill a ways until she made uip her mind to move on...

There are a couple of stories of the Griffith Park coyotes attacking people. And some coyotes snatched a kid once, a story that was lovingly recreated in the movie Suburbia. (If you were ever interested in West Coast punk, Repo Man or anything like that, check out this movie!)
When I see the coyotes, they're usually just standing there, watching traffic.
Waiting on a crate from ACME.

One stretch of 2-lane road I enjoy riding on (Blackhawk Road) winds through a state park. Hardly ever see much wildlife there ... but it eventually turns into John Deere Road (4-lane, business area), and there is where the wild turkeys roam.

You only have to be concerned about the ones you DON'T see.
The scariest was a wild turkey. Not a scary critter, but I was on a country road doing about 80mph on my motorcycle and surprised him. Instead of flying into the woods he jumped up and flew along the road ahead of me then finally angled off into the woods. I was never sure which way he was going to go.
Riding along a bicycle trail on Fort Pickens once I raised my feet up to avoid a snake that was crossing the path. I couldn't see his head or his tail. The trail was about 3 feet wide. Very pretty pattern on him but did not stop to investigate. Either a rattler or a big ole moccasin. Lots of them out there.
bats, cats, dogs, seagulls, possum, armadillo, squirrels, pelicans, and on my ride yesterday I saw a big nasty roadkill turtle that looked like a seaturtle! It was near the water too, but still pretty unlikely... The shell had to be about 2 feet across. On the same ride I saw what looked like a really big falcon, but then I was staring closer and was a huge brown bird with a white head and a fish in it's talons!!! I know some of you northerners see bald eagles all the time, but here in Florida, they are few and far between.
I drive thru the mountains all the time so I see all sorts of critters.
Bison, Elk, Moose, Deer, Antelope, Coyote, Wolf all sorts of raptors, porcupines, skunk, pine marten, badger, beaver, the list goes on and on but I'm feeling too lazy to continue it.
Most interesting think I've come across are bobcats. I saw two on separate occasions in South Texas at National Wildlife Refuges. I got within 4 feet of one of them (he was quite sick) and shot two rolls of film as he ignored me.
I live in Chicago now and what I miss most besides the warm weather, is being able to travel for 10 minutes and then get lost in the natural beauty of that very unique environment. Green Jays, Chachalacas, packs of Collared Peccary and Crested Caracaras - you don't see those by Lake Michigan, as beautiful as it is.
Link below to bobcat photos if anyone wants to look.
There is a small wildlife refuge in Nebraska that you won't want to ride in.
Wildlife refuge #19 in north central Nebraska is a rattlesnake refuge. I've driven thru there in a car and you couldn't help but run them over, the place was that thick with them.
