Yay!

Post by addictionriot »

So my scooter is finally at the dealership! I will have it paid off with my next paycheck, my gear is on the way and should be here this week, and I'm registered with the safety course that starts June 12th.

I've already named him... Benny :D

I will post pics out the wazoo when I get him!

I saw no point in making a whole new thread so..
Here is my new helmet

Image

I love it except it fogs. Granted I wasnt wearing it while riding since I dont have Benny yet... It has vents on the top and on the front. I suggested running through the backyard to see if it helped.. but my boyfriend didnt think the neighbors would appreciate that :p

haha... yeah moving on the scooter will help the fog thing. Sometimes they do fog up though, and you just have to crack the visor a bit.

What kind of helmet is it?

Its called Velocity/VR-1 from JCWhitney

http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Prod ... 60/c-10111

It has extra padding so its snug. I think I look like a cross between speed racer and a storm trooper

Be careful of cheap helmets, many of them I have seen are made in china and are low quality even though they are DOT approved.

There are all kinds of tricks to prevent visor fogging. Start a thread on that and see what happens. I use a product called "Cat Crap" that I got at a sporting goods store. It's cheap and works great. You do have to apply it fairly frequently, but it works well. As I say, feel free to start a thread about that and you'll get a bunch of suggestions.

Enjoy the new Buddy! Be sure to post some photos.

No you didn't... you got a full face DOT approved helmet. And that's a great thing. Many people ride around in nothing. The most important thing in a helmet is fit- and it sounds like you got one that fits well.

You'll find all kinds of opinions on different helmets... and price ranges too... but the best part is just to have one that covers your whole face in case you end up needing it!

Ride Benny in it with confidence!!!

Did you look at other helmets when you went out to buy this one? The best is to go to a motorcycle shop which carries many different brands. You can try them on, look at features, and pricing. I was at meijers once looking at stuff and saw they sold motorcycle helmets. Their helmets are some knock off chinese brand for 80 dollars, for the same price, I found a cheap HJC helmet with better features in a real motorcycle shop.

No one can say if your helmet is good or not, or if you made a bad purchase. I just dont personally trust anything made in China when I'm depending on it to save my life in a crash. But then again you gotta remember a helmet is better than no helmet. You might have a small low speed crash where the impact doesnt hurt you, but the slide does, and with a helmet, it'll take all the abrasion so your face doesnt become ground beef.

Before I bought anything, I went to my local vespa dealer (because there is no one else that sells scooters in my town, whats with that?) I tried on a bunch: mods, 3/4 (which I wanted at first but hated when I put it on) and full.

I was told by my co-worker that wal-mart sold them so I took a look. Like meijers they were about $80 and looked poorly made.

You got me all worried so I looked over my paperwork and even inside the helmet.. it doesnt say "Made In..." anywhere :(

Though, I am glad I went with the full face, I feel more protected.

Is there a sticker on the foam itself under all the padding which says "DOT APPROVED" All helmets should have one besides having one on the lower back of the helmet. Just a "double" check.

You're good then.

Theres people on ebay selling Helmets from hong kong, claiming they are DOT approved, but they arent, just a fake sticker on it. Your helmet has it on the foam itself too, so your ok.

C'mon, why would the neighbors not approve? Little eccentricities make the neighborhood more interesting!

I noticed in a review that it said the visor is not removable? So it cannot be changed? Just curious. I want to get a FFH but I want to be able to remove/change the visor.

Might wanna consider a jacket too. I think internal organs are important

Theres riding jackets out there which look like a regular old every day jacket, but they're made of abrasion resistant materials much stronger than cotton. Motorcycle shops should carry a few brands too, if not, go to a motorcycle super store, those type of shops carry everything, major brand name bikes, jackets, helmets, accessories, anything motorcycle and gear related, they have them.

Go to your local Motorcycle shop, try a few on. Remove-able visors are nice incase you want to replace or pop up for some fresh air.

Pugbuddy: Yeah it cant be removed. I knew that when I bought it.. I guess if I wreak I would be too scared to wear the same helmet again anyway and just buy another one.

Jfrost2: I have a jacket on order from motorcycle-superstore. Its a Fieldsheer Roma with armor, vents, removable liner, and adjustable arm widths.

EDIT: well I lie... you can unscrew it.. I dunno... hmm :?

Ah, JMazza knows the Benny. I am a Benny and proud of it! Any Piney want to make something of it??? Sorry, grew up in NJ and always thought it was funny that if you lived 20 minutes from the shore, the people that lived 2 minutes away would complain about you being a Benny.

Yeah I had a girlfriend a long time ago who was from the shore... told me all about Benny's on a visit there. All my family is from New York so obviously that's why we broke up.

Benny (slang)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Benny is a derogatory term used by residents of the northern Jersey Shore to describe tourists from more northern cities, specifically New York City and its immediate suburbs. The term is predominantly used by locals from the towns and cities of Ocean County and Monmouth County. Its use is widely found from Sandy Hook to Long Beach Island.

Thats great...

Bergen, essex n NY, the area most summertime visitors come from. But most of em use Benny for all tourists. A piney is a local (since they live in a pine forrest).

I have heard folks down here in the far far southland proclaim that "anyone from 50 miles north of mobile is a yankee!" Of course, everyone knows there are yankees, d****yankees, and the worst of all, g** d**** yankees.

The yankee is a northener (likely from more than 50 miles north of Mobile).
The d*** yankee is one who visits.
The g** d**** yankee is one who visits and stays!(Does not apply to South Florida, suburb of New York)

New York City is divided into five "boroughs" or districts: Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, The Bronx, Staten Island.

And who's trying to become the 51st state? South Florida? LOL!!
