This is a pretty debatable topic. I like Boris' advice (above) to stick to one brand when possible, just so you know you're not causing any problems by mixing, and you know any problems with the scooter that come up aren't oil-related.

But there's also the Shampoo theory that when you switch brands often, your hair never gets used to it, ha.

Lawnmower and weedwhacker oil will work in a pinch, but more expensive oils have better additives that really do extend engine life and provide other benefits.

If I were you, I'd read a few articles and learn what you can, then pick a brand and buy a giant container of it, or a case of quart bottles, that way you can get a good brand for less money (bulk), and having a good supply on hand will get you in the habit of filling it up at home frequently, lowering the chances of getting stuck buying lawnmower oil at Walgreens at 2am when you run out.

That's unlikely to happen, but it's a good idea to at least decide on organic/"dino" oil or synthetic oil, and stick to that, it helps keep a consistent film of oil in your engine.

Lawnmower and weedwhacker oil will work in a pinch, but I'd stick to the stuff that's at least labeled to be used for motorcycles. Once you get into the name brands it's all probably pretty similar, but more expensive oils have better additives that really do extend engine life and provide other benefits. The boutique/import brands (Schlotz, Royal Purple, Motul, Bel Ray) are maybe overkill, but I usually use Bel Ray or Royal Purple (for my old scooters) just because the peace of mind is worth an extra buck per quart.
