Buddy Speed: 1/4 Mile

Post by lobsterman »

OK, anybody timed their Buddy on a 1/4 mile?

I want to know what kind of time it could do, how fast it would be going at 1000 feet, and how fast at the end?

I work with a guy who races hopped up Mustangs. He said he'd race my scooter in a 1/4 mile and give me a 1000 foot head start. That sounds like I could do it from a very rough calculation (I am no mathematician) -

Say I am doing 60mph at the 1000 foot mark when he starts, that would be 88 feet/second (5280 feet / 60 seconds). I would have 320 feet to go, so that would be 320/88 = 3.63 seconds.

No way he could do the 1/4 mile in better than 3.63 seconds, right?

Am I missing something math wise (very possible)?

I guess a big factor is could the Buddy accelerate to 60mph in 1000 feet? It would be on drag racing pavement, nice and smooth and level.

What do you guys think?

You'd win hands down. A tricked out mustang that remains street legal isn't going to be better than an 8 second car.

Just found out I had misunderstood his proposal - he wants me to start at the 1000 foot line.

So now the questions is, how long would it take the Buddy to go 320 feet?

Not very long. That is only the length of a straight on a running track- just over 100 yards.

You should be able to cover the 320 ft from a standing start fairly quickly. I just don't know how comfortable I'd feel knowing a (possibly out of control) 9-10 second Mustang is flying up behind me.

Is there some embarrassing bet involved or just bragging rights? Sounds like fun any way. I always challenge my coworkers with the Mustangs and GTO's with my Subaru, right after a good snow fall of course.

If you're doing it on a real track, there should be a concrete divider between the two lanes.

Also, if it's a Mustang that is daily-driven, it's probably not going to run the strip in less than 13 seconds, even with quite a lot of work.

We're talking a real track here.

Also, it is a street-legal car (barely) according to him, but he claims it can do 8 seconds.

This is all good natured ribbing, no bets involved. Just both sort of getting into the ridiculous nature of the idea.

If we ever really do it, we will film it of course.

I should also challenge him to a race with my Subaru in the snow. :)

I think that from a standing start, you'd still win, but tit would be close.

I think your main disadvatage is that starting 1000 ft down the track, it will be a lot harder for you to see the lights turn, so he will quite a good jump on you. And considering how slow a CVT scoot is off the line, that is important!

Cars that can run under 9 seconds have to (or had to) have full roll cages. If he doesn't have that he's either not running legitimately or he's not getting 8 seconds. An 8 second car is pretty fast. Heck a 12 second street car is pretty darn fast.

Do to how ridiculous the whole idea is I assumed a street race. Also I have never seen a drag strip with a divider more than 75 ft past the tree, which still puts you out there to be run over. That or just the gust of wind from the flyby would probably toss me over. Still not saying I wouldn't do it for the "street cred".

No way in hell unless he's talking about the 1/8th mile. :P

FWIW, with a car running 8 second quarter mile times, you'd have to have either a roll bar or a roll cage installed...

Unless it's purpose-built for drag-racing, it's NOT going to go that fast.

I think you need to watch American Graffiti again and have someone do a Pharoahs thing (remember the cop car?) on the Mustang. Then you'll win for sure!

Sounds like a fun challenge but, like DO3 said, not sure I want to be in front of a Mustang gaining that kind of speed coming up behind me. So let me know when you guys get around to doing this and I'll be more than happy to hold the camera or drop the flag.

DO IT. If not, tell him to come to OKC and I will, on The General, with the speaker blaring Dixie.

FWIW, when I had the stock turbo on my car, I was consistently running 14 seconds.

I looked at old time slips, and I was at about 11.8 seconds at 1000'.

Granted, a Mustang is going to behave differently than my Audi, but that should give you a decent idea of how much time you'd have on him...

I guess. :D

We have no idea what this guy's car is capable of, all we know for sure is the Buddy. I'm guessing here, but 320 feet is probably around 1-2 city blocks. From a dead stop, I figure I can maybe make it up to 40 mph in 1.5 blocks. So I don't think you're going to be anywhere near top speed in this contest.

I wonder, has anyone tried holding the Buddy at a dead stop with one or both brakes while holding the throttle wide open? I REALLY don't recommend this but it's one way of making a faster start. I've done this with automatics with torque converters but NEVER with a CVT, so I have no idea if it would help or hurt. I also have no idea what it would do to your Buddy's innards.

I've cranked the throttle wide open all in one motion. I wouldn't recommend pulling up or leaning back in the slightest, 'cause you're about it do a wheelie and who know's what'll happen then with the 'Stang roaring up on your rear.
You don't wanna get mixed up with a guy like me. I'm a loner Dottie, a REBEL.
