An important update regarding the health of the Red Baron: After implementing the aforementioned fixes, the scooter ran better. Still not right, though. It did fine for about 3 miles then it was back to the old "cough and sputter" syndrome.
I futzed with it here and there and generally appreciated the fact that all the rain was happening when the Red Baron was not running well.
Worked on it yesterday, a sunny (though cold) day. I corrected a few dealer inflicted issues, etc. and took it for a ride. I was ECSTATIC!! It had NEVER run stronger! Then....about 3 miles into the ride the syndrome was back. Crap!
I called Ron (Mechanic Meister at Scoot Over in Tucson) and descibed my problems. He said he had another one in his shop doing the same thing and that he too had gone through the fuel delivery system as well as the electrical. Said he was going to check the emissions vapor canister (or whatever it's called) that is in a little tube between the carb/airbox inlet and the fuel tank...to catch vapors, I guess. Since we don't have any emissions testing here, I simply removed it from the line.
Ladies and gentlemen, The Red Baron is BACK!!!

Well I’m glad that’s settled!
Does that mean you will keeping the “Red Baron” a little longer?
I’m a little confused with what was done to fix your problem, is the item, or tube in this picture? Or, can you point it out so we will all know what to look for with weather changes and or higher mileage.

It is not in the picture there...but if you follow the big tube from the carburetor to the right (in the picture) towards your airbox, you will see a small tube feeding off to the top (as it would be in the picture). In the middle of said tube, you will see a small white ceramic "canister". That is what I eliminated. I simply removed it and the remaining tube was long enough (just barely) to rehook to the air intake tube. Worked like a champ!
As for keeping the Red Baron longer...maybe, maybe not. If there is a buyer out there I'll sell it, if not, I'll keep it a while longer.

i bought a used 2007 125 italia buddy with only 100 miles on it a month ago. after about 10 days it started sputtering a lot. i took it to a mechanic, who was struggling to figure it out. he cleaned the carb jet and replaced the oil which fixed the sputtering that occurred off the line, but it was still pretty bad at higher speeds.
after pointing him to this thread, he checked on the wiring that's underneath the pet carrier (sorry...don't know the actual technical stuff that's there), and found some loose connections. fixed it right away.
he gave me a nice discount for finding the info for him.
so, thanks!
