Motorcyclist Buddy Admiration

So on my ride home from work on Friday I was switching lanes when I noticed a motorcycle (Honda Rebel) quickly approaching from behind. As a courtesy, I moved over the the left part of the lane to give the motorcyclist the option to ride staggered on the right.

When we got to a light the guy pulled up next to me and the first thing he said was, "Hey is that a Buddy?" I told him it was and said, "I'm fan of the Buddy, I go the Genuine site from time to time to check them out!" He asked me how fast I've gone on it (probably close to 55) and was really impressed by the speed. He told me that he's seen me riding a lot, thought it was really cool that I rode in all seasons and has been wanting to talk to me, which explains why he seemingly flew up behind me from out of nowhere.

It was a really cool encounter!

That's a good warm fuzzy story. I hope in time I'll have something like that happen to me.

I think the closest I've gotten was getting a wave from a biker that was so gritty I think there were cartoonish stink lines trailing behind him.

Harley riders are always nice to me. They give me a smile, nod or a little wave. I get nothing from the sport bike guys.

On my ride to Indiana and back this past weekend, I encountered lots of people on two- (or three-) wheelers. Some waved, some didn't, (and one waved wildly like a drunken high-shcooler on his first scoot under the influence of his first beer), but the only one that I got a bad vibe from was a jerk on a racing-style bike who passed both me and the car that was passing me in a single bound, at about twice my speed.

Given that Genuine has been signing a lot of motorcycle dealers lately—some of the biggest Harley dealers in the country, in fact—the Buddys are, at least, going to be much more recognizable among the MC community.

My wife and I were out scootin last weekend. When we came up to a red light we noticed a big ol motorcycle in the left turn lane. He was staring at our scoots with a smile on his face. He revved his engine and then I revved mine. We bothed laughed gave a nod and went on our different ways.

If you don't mind me asking, are you male or female? My wife gets a number of compliments on her ride, but nobody ever says anything me, except the occasional cager harassment once a year or so.

On the other hand, I do get "the wave" from motorcyclists who aren't under-30 men on crotch rockets, and when I've parked downtown (if you're in Pittsburgh you might know the underpass on Fifth Ave) people are usually friendly.

I'm not surprised it was a Rebel rider. That's a modest bike for people who want a nice, reliable, economical ride.

Last week I was shocked to get waves from a group of about 5 crotch rocket riders! I usually get waves from cruisers (generally the more gritty the more friendly, I guess they don't feel the need to snub others to prove their self worth), sometimes get waves from sport bike riders (which always surprises me), and never get waves from what I consider to be midlife crisis riders (hard to describe, it is more the attitude they have... does anyone know what I am talking about?)

Now, put my daughter on the back and *everyone* waves (except the midlife crises and I don't count them anyway) we even often get a thumbs up or she will get a special wave of her very own (they give me a low wave and then give her a separate wave). It is very funny to watch them.

For the record, my daughter is 11 and exactly as tall as I am, so it is not like they think they are waving at a toddler or something, she rides in a ff helmet, jeans, sturdy shoes, gloves and armored jacket (you can't tell from looking at her if it is a girl or boy once she is geared up-but don't tell her that  ).

I'm male. I often sit in traffic on Forbes and Braddock, which is where I seem to get a lot of positive responses from other motorists. During my last encounter a motorcycle came up from behind and started to ride staggered with me. When we approached traffic there was a guy on a sport bike (under-30 crotch rocket rider) in the opposite lane, who saw us and jumped into formation. When we hit the light all 3 of us fanned out in different directions and I got a beep from the motorcyclist behind me as we departed.

I've received "nod of approval" from a Harley rider.

Those are the ones that always seem to be royally pissed when I shoot past them in the next lane. Around here, that seems to be most of the Harley guys. The riders of other makes of cruiser nearly always wave, as do most of the sport bikers. I think Portland just has a really friendly 2-wheel community by and large.
