HOWTO: replace left brake lever

Post by danix »

I didn't take pictures, sorry. It's pretty basic.
SFSC had both levers in stock but said the right side lever never breaks. Mine is chipped, so I got one, but didn't bother replacing it yet.

Briefly:
- remove 4 screws holding the top plastic cover (which goes around the speedo)
- separate that top cover and lift, and rotate so you have access to the brake lever area
- loosen and remove the lower nut holding the brake lever, then remove the top screw. The only thing holding the lever now is the brake cable.
- I then pulled the cable with the lever, and twisted the lever so the cable end would pop out. Lever is removed.
- pull cable end with pliers, and install on new lever
- reinstall screw
- reinstall nut
- reinstall top cover

15 minute job tops.

Awesome, good post.

15 minutes plus the extra 15 fiddling with the headset, trying not to break plastic tabs... ;)

wouldn't hurt to check to make sure the speedo cable is snug before reattatching the two headset pieces... i have had to crack that sucker a couple of times to reattatch the cable.... usually after a couple of days of gleeful ignorance of my rate of travel.... *(which is unsafe and to be avoided)

Another easier way to deal with the speedometer cable is to disconnect it at the wheel end and puch it up. It's a lot easier to hook up down there than up at the speedo itself.
