Blinker and electric start problems

Post by wakeabyss »

I've had my buddy 125 italia for two and half years now and this is the first major problem I've had.

Here's my problem. If I use the left or right indicator or even the hazards button, I get a loud constant buzzing sound and no flashing lights. The buzzing is coming from that plastic cylinder "under the hood" which I assume makes the clicking sound when the blinker is on.

Also, I can't electrically start the motor. I hear nothing when I push the electric start button, and yes, I'm holding the brake. I charged the battery and checked both fuses and all seemed fine.

Both of these symptoms seem to have stopped working at the same time.

Can anyone help me please?

I had the same problem but could still kick start it. I took the battery out and got it checked and it was just fine. Left the battery out for a few days and then put it back in and it has not happened again, although I have now started doing other work so it has only been starte a few times since then.

I think you've got two separate problems - the turn signals, and the starter.

Your problem with the turn signals sounds like a bad flasher unit. It's simple enough to just swap in a new unit and see if that fixes it. Other possible causes are a flaky switch or a short to the frame somewhere.

As for the starter, first check your kill switch. On the Buddy the kill switch will prevent both the starter from engaging and the spark plug from firing.

If the switches are right, the battery is good, yet the starter isn't spinning, try shorting the two large terminals on the starter relay. That should cause the starter to engage and start the engine. If it does the relay needs to be replaced (or the start button is bad). If it doesn't start you either have a bad starter or bad wires.

There are other, less common causes for the starter to not work, but these are the biggies. Take it in to your dealer to be sure.

How did you check the battery? Are you SURE it's not the battery?

I ask, because I experienced exactly the same problems when I started to drive my Buddy with a dying battery. I charged it overnight, verified it with a multimeter, and it still wouldn't do anything. I couldn't electric start, and I got the buzzing sound for the hazards and turn signals. Eventually, the battery died, and I just kickstart all the time. I manually operate the turn signal (no buzzing anymore). I really should get a new battery, but the lights and brake lights work fine for now, and the riding season is coming to an end.

But I'd be surprised if it wasn't your battery causing both problems, since that's exactly what happened to me.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Well... after tearing the bike apart trying to find maybe a frayed wire or something, I decided to go buy a new battery, and what do you know, everything works perfectly now  .
