Need help choosing best-est scooter for Atlanta area! Help!!

Post by SaraPants »

Hi, I'm new to the whole scooter world. My car got totalled last week and now I have the not-so-perfect opportunity to buy a funky little scooter like I've always wanted. Strangely enough, though, I'd always kinda envisioned my scooter days being spent in a city on the sea far far away from Atlanta, Ga, but such is life. Ya know?

Is there anyone here from the Hot-lanta area (God, I HATE that goofy term) that can help steer me toward the best scooter for this area? I live OTP up in Alpharetta and commute to Buckhead 3x a week durning obscene AM traffic. What's gonna be my best choices? Where should I buy from? What do I need to know before I buy?

I pretty much need like an Obi Wan Scooter Master to show me the way. Hehe! Thanks!!

Well, not to be biased, but this is modern buddy.

9/10 will tell you get a Buddy 125.

It's probably one of the best scoots in it's price range for quality, performance, and reliability.

I would say the first place you need to look is Twist N' Scoothttp://www.twistnscoot.com/ either in Buckhead or Decatur (I like the Decatur location due to its layout.). These guys know what in the heck their doing. Steve (at Decatur) and Bill (in Buckhead) are both extremely friendly and will lead you down the right path. They sell Genuine, SYM and few other good brands. More importantly they have a heck of a lot of time for you, and aren't afraid to tell you the truth.

The other option is Scooter Super Store in Midtown, but I would seriously avoid this place if you can. I have yet to have a good experience there, and the horror stories about their shop are just down right scary.

As far as shops those are your two best choices. The other shops in the area I would steer clear of. They mainly sell Chinese junk that changes its name and logo every other month.

As far as scoots, I have a Buddy Blackjack, and my love for it grows by leaps and bounds every time I ride it. However since you live OTP, and if you plan to take the highway, I would say you want a 200cc at the very least.

First, what roads do you plan on traveling to get from Alpharetta to Buckhead on a scooter 3x per week? That will likely determine what sort of scooter will be the safest. If you are planning on using GA 400, then you should plan on getting at least a 200cc class scooter. If you are using Alpharetta St./Roswell Rd. for the commute, then perhaps a 125cc would do nicely. How much money are you prepared to spend here for the right scooter? Answer these questions and advice will come easier.
It's official... I'm a "scootaholic"...even have the custom t-shirt to prove it.

I don't live in Atlanta so I don't have any specific advice but I will tell you I always get excited when I to go Atlanta for Dragon*Con every year and see scooters parked downtown. There are always scoots parked around the area and this year I saw a Buddy!

I used to have a Honda Metropolitan. My Buddy 125 is leaps and bounds over the Met. The Met is a great little scooter but the Buddy has so much more power and acceleration that I feel safer riding my big 125cc scooter over the little 50cc. I chose the Buddy because of it's reliability, looks and price. I also test rode the Vino 125 but the Buddy 125 was more comfortable for me and was zippier than the Vino.

My husband has had a Aprilia Scarabeo 150 and a Vespa LX 150. Both of his scoots were heavier/taller and less comfortable for me to handle. I can hardly get his Vespa off the center stand and instead usually just drag it across the garage floor.

Parts for both his Italian scoots were also WAY more expensive than parts for my Met or Buddy. I really appreciate the reasonable price point for the original scooter AND repairs.

Good luck!
