Any suggestions on a route from Phoenix, Az to the Los Angeles area?

How about the parts of old Highway 66 that still exist to the north of you near the I-40?

I spent some time with Google maps and found a route from Orange County to Palm Springs; no freeways. Google estimates it will take 5 hours. I could probably save 2 hours if I illegally (Buddy 125) went on the 10 freeway near Cabazon for about 5 miles.

I don't know if there is a difference in California law between highways and freeways but highway 62 dumps right in near Cabazon. 4 hours from Parker to Cabazon, according to Google. You could take highway 60/72/95 from Phoenix to Parker which should take about 4 hours.

You'd have to take extra gas because you'd be in the middle of the desert with no gas stations for long stretches.

This avoids interstates and, I think, Interstate sized highways - at least in AZ. But I have not been on most of these roads, so I don't know what most of them are like.

The desert is the hard part, of course, but you should know this if you've been in the state for any time. At least you're choosing the right time of year for the ride. Lots better in November than June, that's for sure!

Lots of options, too, once you get to around Apple Valley in CA. This road looks particularly interesting. Anyone have experience on this stretch of road?

We take that ride with our LA Scooter Meetup Group. Reeeealy nice. Here's some pictures taken on one of our rides. This one only went as far as Mt. Wilson, but you'll get an idea.

Unfortunately, that route's closed for a while because of this summer's wildfire's. That was the epicenter of the worst fire in this are in decades—hundreds of thousands of acres burned.

It's a beautiful area. Just minutes north of the city, forests and snow capped peaks in the winter. It may be next spring before the route is reopened. Sections of the Angeles Crest Hwy. are often closed in the winter due to rockslides and snow. One section was closed for six (I think) years until earlier this spring. Then the damn fires hit.

That stretch from Parker to Twentynine Palms is 110 miles. My guess is that there may not be single gas station the whole way. Looking at it, I think that's the longest stretch without fuel. I've got about 120 mile range on my Buddy and carry an extra liter of emergency gas. You should be able to make the distance fuel wise, but that, my scootering friend, is some desolate country.

route 2 is a great ride, I've done it in a cage a few times, I would be careful to avoid it if there is any snow up there.
