Gear Oil leak...

Post by mojosnmikospapis »

Anyone have this issue currently or before?

For me, it started on my Buddy 50 after the first 500 mile gear oil change by the dealer. Since then I have brought it back to him 3x.

After getting it back about 4 days now I haven't seen a leak but I just wanted to throw it out to the group for any info.

The dealer has changed the gear oil & gasket 2x already. The 3x I brought back, the bike did not leak @ the shop. One of the techs thinks it's just leaking the overflow out of the vent. He believes the problem should stop and go away on its own. His Roughouse was doing the same.

I am waiting to see about that....

Scoot has just over 800 miles now.

frustrating

Post by Sailboat13 »

As some may recall I had a horrid time with recurring gear oil leaks. As it turned out it was the hub (don't know the name of the part) near the gear box. I was to the point of wishing I hadn't even bought a Buddy. Now I've got about 1200 miles on my Buddy 150 since they fixed it and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. If I had the time I'd take a picture of the part that was leaking, but I'm on my way to Florida. Maybe I can post a picture tomorrow sometime. Hope they can fix your scoot for ya.

The only explanation I can think of is the gear oil seal being broken from too much oil being added. Then him doing the same thing again and ruining another seal. Or installed improperly.

It might go away on it's own, but if the seal is truly shot, it'll just keep leaking over time.

I don't know for sure what is going on but the same thing happened to me from overfilling the gear oil.

leak stopped?

Post by mojosnmikospapis »

For those that had this issue, are you saying the problem eventually stopped on its own?

I would imagine if the seal/gasket is shot then it should just keep leaking.

I will take a peek tomorrow to see if it's still holding up.

I am 99.9% certain that the gear oil was overfilled. This same thing happened to me on both of my scooters. Litterally hours after picking up the scooter from the dealer (for first initial service) the rear wheel was mucked up with red fluid. Once parked a nice size puddle would be under the rear wheel as well.

My solution was to drain the fluid myself and add precisely 90cc of gear oil. Use Krud Cutter to clean things up and you will be good to go.

If the gear oil is overfilled, You have to drain and replace with correct amount of oil. Overfilling will kill the seal if you ride with it overfilled. The buddy is different than a lot of bikes in that most you fill until the oil reaches the top. The buddy is a measured amount and if it reaches the top, it is way high.

An easy experiment to try is this: get yourself a cheap measuring cup and drain your gear oil into it. Make sure the cup is incremented into ML. 90 CC is aproximately 90 ML. You may get a little under that as oil will not fully drain from the compartment. And 90 CC is really not that much oil either. If the amount you collect is grossly over 90 ML then your leak is clearly the mechanic's fault. Some scooter stores have other brands like Kymco and SYM. And they may require the oil to be filled to the bottom of the drain port. Which is not the case with the Buddy.
I have had a gear oil leak which was completely my fault for overfilling it. And it did take days for it to go away. So good luck with that :D

Just to clarify 90 ml and 90 cc are exactly the same, and you should get exactly 90 when you drain or really close, because the gear box holds a total of 110 ml, but 20 ml stays in. 90 is the replacement volume.
