I'm somewhat proud of the fact that on ModernVespa, this article led to all sorts of whining about why Vespa riders are so unfairly stereotyped, etc. but here we get to the mean of it and just call him an ass.

Right on!

As I posted on MV:
ericalm wrote:Vespa riders are Harley riders are always held up as two opposite extremes, but I suspect in many ways the two groups are actually probably very similar.

The major difference is probably that Harley folks are better able to shrug off every slight and insult from the ignorant masses.

I thought the guy was trying to be funny till I got to near the end. Overall, I think the guy just likes putting people down. Here he's making assumptions about both camps, stoopit assumptions. Kinda sad when you think about it. But don't think too long, just go out and ride (and laugh at those who don't get it).

Funny thing is, we scooter riders get far more respect from actual Harley riders that we do from the author of that article.

Funny I named my scoot the "Pig" cause it's not big enough to be called a hog.
I like his backpeddling after afew posts, what he was trying to say is...blah,blah, I'm so sorry, don't hate me.
I don't ride a vespa so I'm not offended at all, my rat affords me that kicked back cruiser feel.

And all this time I thought the "perched" position was because I was holding the gas tank in place with my butt instead of my knees. :P

It's one question I love asking MC riders when the ribbing starts to lose the good-naturedness. "when you catch air or hit a pretty good bump, what do you do to keep the bike stable?" Most answer with something about gripping the tank with their legs. I smile and say..."now: what if there wasn't anything there to hold on to?"

I ride a rough house 50 and don't exactly "perch" on it. Being 6-1/230 I sit all the way back on the seat quite comfortably. I plan on someday owning a BMW dual purpose bike but will always have a scoot of some sort, they're just too damn much fun!!

Also, I'm sure some of you guys and gals have noticed this, Harley riders and crotch rocket riders almost NEVER wave while on the road. But for some reason, I tend to get waves from touring bikes, dual purpose bikes and BMW's. It seems to me that they are out there riding for the same reason we are, for the fun, joy and freedom of it!

It seems to me the traumasaki's and Harley's of the world are trying to portray an image, as if to compensate for something.

I'm just sayin.........
I don't suffer from insanity........I enjoy every second of it!

I think a lot of people are just ignorant. I'm not meaning that in a mean way. They just don't know the fun of a scooter. I've had both motorcycles and my scooter. Motorcycles were fun but I love my scooter more.

I liked this guy's response to the blog.....

I'm 6'1 and 225 pounds. (not a little, wussie guy by anyone's standards) I have ridden BMW and Harley Davidson motorcycles for over 40 years. I still own a large motorcycle but I also own several Vespa scooters. They are far easier to maneuver in urban traffic, get 70+ mpg vs 40mpg on the motorcycle. What's not to like. Apparently, you must have some deep-seated sexual issues that you need to come to grips with because whether you ride a 1000 pound motorcycle or a small scooter does not mean squat to me or other long-term bikers that I am acquainted with. Wake up and smell the coffee.

I would also add: let's stop giving this guy web hits! Not only is it simply ignorant, it's really pretty boring stuff that's not written very well.

And to be fair, it's not as hating on scooters as some things. He just seems to be trying to be funny... on a subject he knows nothing about. It wasn't even his observations... he stole someone else's unoriginal stereotypes and wrote up some nonsense, and now his advertises are going to think he's popular from all the readership we're sending his way.
