it wasnt my Buddy's fault

While i do not, (or have i ever) condone drinking and driving, the sad fact is i received a DUI on a Sunday mornnig in Sept while scooting. i went to a friends party, thought i slept it off, & i was wrong. 4500 hundred in fines, lawyers fees & 15 days in jail . No bueno, plus i had to explain to my kid (12) why i would be gone for a couple weeks.That one hurt the most. But not to bring any one down, ive learned from this. i found this room when i was trying to fix my scooter. You guys are awsome, and your room is what scootn is all about. I read alot on problem shooting in here and fixed my lil buddy after googling /buddy wont start or idle/......Hope yall dont hold the dui aganst me. After my lawyer described my scooter & its top speed, a wopping 43 mph, the judge laughed and said IT WASNT YOUR BUDDYS FAULT.The whole court room fell out laughing! anyways, better days . Thanks again yall!!

Welcome to the boards, dawg onit. We won't condone what you did, but neither are we a group to beat you over the head with it. It sounds like you've paid your price (I'm glad nothing worse resulted from it) and are moving on in a positive direction!

thanks pug, it was 8:24 in the morning, i just wanted to get home.it was my first ever & last. thanks for replying, i know i made a bad choice that morning , but i thank the man up stairs for the lesson coming in a way with no one getting hurt from my dumb ass. im not a big drinker so it really got to me. the officer said if i had just eaten something i would have been allright.

Welcome to the forum. Thanks for sharing this and reminding us that a crash isn't the only potential negative outcome from drinking and riding. You sound genuinely remorseful, you paid the fine, did the time—no one should really hold that against you.

I know a few people who aren't necessarily frequent or heavy drinkers who have wound up with DUIs. As you indicate, it's a pretty bad experience, nothing like just getting a ticket. It doesn't make anyone a bad person; people make errors in judgement and make mistakes. Unfortunately, this is one lesson that's pretty tough to have to learn.

thanks eric,i definately did learn the hard way,hopefully it helps someone somewhere.just because you sleep doesnt mean you can drive right away in the morning.

I get a little jaded by those that say I don't condone it and then do it and get busted for it.

15days? Jail time is usually for repeat offenders. Is this your first?

You should get your money back from your lawyer. He (she?) is either an idiot or a liar.

Buddy 50s are restricted to 30mph. 125s and up can do MUCH more than 43 mph.

50% of two wheel deaths are alcohol related. If your going to drink..don't scoot, don't drive. I'm gald you survived but drinking and scooting is just plain stupid and dangerous to others and you.

According to something I read years ago, drivers who are hung over can be just as impaired as drivers who are still drunk. If you think about it, when you're hung over, you're definitely not operating at 100%, so this would make sense.

sorry you feel that way Raton, yes it was my first offense & i totally understand it is a big problem. so yeah your right , i got nuthn to say but i sucked that morning. what i can HONESTLY say is look up az DUI sentencing if you think i lie.i have a buddy 50 cc thats top speed is 43 mph also not a lie. i know i messed up that day, but i am no liar sir. but i guess you know everything allready.

DUI offenders should get the keys taken away and get automatic jail time.

maybe you missed his point about sleeping it off. His post said he drank, then slept, then drove home. He did not "drink and scoot" as you say; instead he "drank, slept, and then scooted". His mistake was that he didn't sleep long enough or wait long enough for the alcohol to get out of his system. In his mind he had done the prudent thing, but miscalculated how long it was gonna take to get sober.

Pretty obvious that he learned a valuable lesson in a very painful and expensive way. Hopefully his post will alert others to the fact that if you tie one on, it can take a LONG time to get your blood alcohol under the legal limit. Sleeping a few hours might not be enough.

If your running 43 then your derestricted, I must assume that you have proper endorsement, tags and insurance.

You didn't make a "made a bad choice that morning" you made a decision the night before to take your scooter and get loaded, and then ride before you were sober.

You thought you were sober? Oh I slept so I thought I was OK? Obviously the cop had some reason to pull you over.

I don't thank the man upstairs...I thank the cop that got your drunk ass off the road to protect me.

dawg onit has been nothing but polite, honest and sincere here. He admits making a mistake, doesn't make excuses, accepts his punishment and is remorseful and has learned his lesson. At its best, that's the way the system works. Don't blame him if you don't like it. There's no reason to criticize or lambaste him further.

I'd feel much differently about someone coming on and boasting about getting away with it or how much they can down at the pub and still ride home. That's not what this thread is about.

We all sometimes behave in ways or do things we wouldn't condone. It's part of human nature. The smarter among us learn from our own and others' experiences.

I think the OP is a valuable reminder of what can happen to ordinary people even when they're trying to exercise good judgment. I'm locking it but leaving it in General Discussions.

And please allow me to remind everyone of a couple cornerstones of the Posting Guidelines:
Be civil to one another. Treat everyone with respect. Keep it friendly and remember that not everyone shares your particular viewpoint, nor should anyone be ridiculed or patronized for not believing or behaving exactly as you do.
