Yes, we had 5 days of serious rain here in So Cal and the super close full moon last weekend had tides coming up over the 101 where I lived such that people were literally surfing in the streets! But alas, I took my scooter gang now officially named "The Mockers" to the Salton Sea. The map say it was only 250 miles but door to door it was a 12 hour adventure. And I think 250miles is all I got in me in a day.

This ride started at the ocean, went up 4000k to the mountains down 4000k feet to the desert out to an inland "sea". WHERE ELSE CAN YOU DO THAT?!!!

The biggest surprise were the Borrego Springs Sculptures. Some rich dude owns roughly 3 square miles in the desert and commissioned dozens of hugh metal sculptures to be placed out there. We had heard about this and figured they'd be hocky like the sprayed insulation dinosaurs you see across america in "prehistoric forests". Holy smoke we had NO IDEA and didn't even get to explore them all. Check out the pictures at my flicker

Those are some great sculptures (and I have an BFA that qualifies me to say that

).

Your photo of being trampled by the elephant reminds of one of our local objets d'art: one of the two casts of Leonardo's Horse, which has one of its feet almost touching the ground, and is a popular subject for people to pose under.

there were fire ants down there (well red ones anyways) it was only after I had it taken that I realized I should have been on the other side of the pole holding up the foot. I didn't want to get back down with the ants

How easily we forget! Try hard and you will remember the death defying ride of those stalwart Pensacola scootering souls who bravely trekked to the highest point in Florida last year. Yes, it was a foolish journey with no maps, no compass, just the adventurer's unyielding desire to go where so few have dared.

Jijifer, where, exactly, are those sculptures. We come out to San Diego once in a while and that is something I would like to see.

These may be easier to reach from Palm Springs. They are all along Borrego Springs Road in either direction if you get on Borrego Springs Road at Christmas Circle in Borrego Springs. You could just take the 78 through Anza Borrego and you'll come upon the south end of Borrego Springs road.

If you go to Borrego Springs be sure to hit up the Ice Cream and Fudge shop on Palm Canyon Road (that's the main street through the town.) It's on the west end of town but they are really nice folks who get around town on a scooter!

Seriously? You're poking fun at the Floridians?! You realize if you rattle that bees nest they're only going to start talking about their frigid winter dipping down into the low 60's and being upset about having to put on a neck warmer, right?

You're only gonna feel sad when the great peaks of Michigan are exposed for the lake-effect-snow-drift that you call home. Really sad.

Dennis, I missed that ride remember? Anyways I was talking more about wide open areas and off-road scooting like in the original post. I'm sure there's plenty good places in Alabama to ride off-road if you don't mind dodging shotgun blasts! CRIMENY!

Okay, that's really funny. My house sits at about 500 feet and I'm not even close to being on top of what would be considered a big hill here in Portland. Wow. I never realized how very flat Florida is. I was born there so you'd think I might know something like this!

I are a Floridian and I braved the commute to work this morning on my Stella WITH NO WINDSHIELD!

Temperature was 45F. BRUTAL!! It warmed up to about 63F for the ride home thank goodness. Only had to wear one balaclava and I left the heated liners out of my winter gloves on the way home. That was a mistake that won't happen again.

HURRY UP SPRING!

Never had a problem in Alabama. I do love that state. Very pretty. Friendly folks, as long as you don't discuss religion or football. Oh, I forgot, they're the same thing.

You are SO right on that Dennis. Football is religion here, with Bear Bryant sitting at the right hand of Jaysus, and Saban is at his right hand...
