Buddy 50, lots of smoke when cold

Post by tlareywi »

Hi all,

I very recently purchased an '09 Buddy 50, just 100 mi on it so far. This is my first scooter ever and first motor vehicle in 4 years of chosen abstinence. I use it mainly for commuting in mostly urban stop and go areas.

One part of my commute includes a 1 hour ferry ride where the scooter sits exposed to the open air, which is around 40 degrees; minus the wind chill factor from the moving ferry; so maybe 35 degrees effectively. When the ferry ride is over the scoot starts with no problems and then idles for 1 - 2 minutes while docking completes. When I finally twist to take off it hesitates and blows a 'huge' plume of white-bluish smoke; then it's fine. After just a couple additional minutes of running, no smoke is visible in my rear view, even after sitting at a stop for a couple minutes.

The only other scenario I've seen this the first start in the morning although to a lesser degree. Again, it's cold in Seattle this time of year. 36 - 40 degrees in the morning. As above, visible exhaust seems normal after a couple minutes of riding.

It this behavior normal for this type of scoot or should I be worried and have it looked at?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds normal to me, just usual start up behavior with the blue smoke. It's common on two strokes since you're burning the oil with the gasoline at the same time.

Nothing sound wrong to me. Your scooter is a 2Stroke engine and it will smoke more when it is cold and in the warm up process. I have had a couple of 2Stroke cycles and they did the same thing. Happy Riding!!!!!

I'd be more nervous if it didn't smoke.
Valves are for wussies.

Sounds quite normal for a 2 cycle. My scoot will have a similar experience in the morning while warming up. Smokes more at idle until it warms up a bit. Rode home tonight in 30 degree weather which was nippy, but not horribly cold. The scoot took about 3 mintues of riding before it warmed up and felt steady.

Keep riding and keep us informed throughout the breakin process and when Spring brings warmer weather.
