Modern Buddy

The weather has been too cold, too wet, too icy, too everything! But we've got a week of clear and "warm enough" now and I'm excited to be back on the scoot!

I've noticed that I need to relearn some good habits though--watch the mirrors, pay better attention to surrounding traffic--just be more aware! After a long layoff, it's easy to just start "going" and not pay attention to how you're riding on your way there! Ride safe, everyone!

I've had the scooter out a couple times in the last month or so, but each time I brought him back inside. Yesterday I went for a short ride and parked him on the porch when I got back. Last night was frosty and they're predicting light flurries, so I didn't ride today, but as far as I'm concerned... scooter season is back.

Your more brave than I, I have been really wanting to get back out since I havn't had her out on the road since late January, but with all the snow melting I'm really nervous about ice in the shady spots. Hopefully soon, like by mid-late march I'll feel comfortable enough to get back to riding the SheBeast to work

I did it! I put the battery in Buddy after I got home from work today and fired her up. My daughter and I went for about a three mile ride. Its 33 degrees outside now. The roads and parking lots are clear of ice, It's time to ride again.

I'm hoping to get her out this weekend. fingers crossed.

LOL, speaking of winter, I had to shovel a path in my back yard to get the scooter out today. The roads appear to be pretty dry and its supposed to get into the mid 30s-low 40s here soon. I also went out today and bought a pair of quilted (insulated) Carhartt overalls, so I'm back in bussiness. I figure it was a good sign casue the scooter didn't see its shadow when coming out of storage, spring is officially here

Not anymore, it's bleeding March. I don't care what's on the ground or where the mercury is! The geese are moving here and I saw robins the size of grapefruit. Spring or bust!
*edit* Oh, yeah: almost forgot the main telltale around here: the bluejays are out being feisty again.

I was actually out riding again this week after the recent rain had washed away the banks of sand and salt on the roads from the over-reaction to the "snowpocalyse". Today, it started off beautifully, but there's a snow/mix coming down now. So long as they don't put down anymore sand/salt, we should be good till next year, I think.

No amount of plows will take the native ass-hats off the road. And that's just sad.

Oh.. there's also the potholes. That's the most disturbing part... meteors do less damage to the roads than the winter plows do.

Ride when you can folks. Be safe and watch out for grinch-mo-foes!

I got out for a ride on Feb. 28th, because I was having knee surgery the next day and wasn't about to go into March without a ride!! It was short and sweet and involved dodging a lot of ice, but it was worth it!!!

+1 to that! Potholes are horrendous here in Michigan. I've been scoping them out all winter so I know where to dodge them once I get the scoot out.

Denver has had a particularly long cold snap and I am back on the scooter again (finally!) this week. Really bad road conditions .
10 inch wheels don't like this crap!

Yes, Oklahoma cannot build good roads to start with and the potholes in Tulsa are abusive, to say the least! I'm spending a good amount of time scouting the roadway ahead when I ride to make sure I don't take a dive (to the center of the earth)!

i was out playing last night and will have to check the temp in the am to see if its ride to work or take the cage

we are just getting a bit too cold at night and warm enough during the day that the snow is melting and the roads may not be completely dry

but our first group ride of the year is planed for saturday

so any one in the green bay area meet up at riverside rides at 3 on saturday the 6th of may

I know what you mean about snow melting during the day. The water runs across the road and in the morning it is ice. I would be there Saturday but I will be on a hockey rink all weekend in Beaver Dam. I will make it one of these times.

But in the meantime... I had a very brief run-in with a patch of (re)frozen snowmelt in the road this morning. I saw it as I approached, and I took care not to do anything crazy on it... like turning or braking. But I could still feel my back tire lose traction as I crossed it. The next instant I was back on pavement, and all was well again.

its hard to see but we had freezing fog this morning you can see it pretty good by the controls

the fender and leg sheild were full of frost along with my helmet jacket gloves and pants

Got my scoot in Sept. Have been able to put 500 miles on it since.... had 463 when i got it and its an '07 during the winter. So geared for my first spring summer etc on Ms. Jones. In the downtime upgraded the lights to 1156's and did the headlamp as well. Wanted to ride to my lessons (on off time I teach little kids percussion about 16 miles away but across the entire city to get there) but the wind was gusting to 40. Decided against it today. (In Oklahoma ya know where the wind comes sweeping down the plains). But it's On!!! Riding today for sure. I am really wanting a windscreen mainly for rocks bugs etc, but are they even harder in wind? comments? Any Okies out there I am ready to meet up. Want to try a longer ride, somewhere cool for fun. Welcome Dr. Rock! I highly recommend a windshield--it causes no problems in high winds IMHO.

Yep, winds up to 35mph and 40% chance of rain in Tulsa today. Took the RAV4 to work.

thanks pugbuddy being a Tulsan I would think you know of the wind as well!!

Speaking of potholes in Michigan. In my drive to the Detroit area today, I saw something that was difficult to believe. Somewhere on I94 near Jackson, a truck with flashing yellow lights sat on the shoulder. As I approached, a guy darted out from the side of this truck onto the highway with some sort of patching material, tossed it in a pothole and ran back to the truck. The speed limit there is 70, I was probably going 75, and I had to hit the brakes and slow down or otherwise I would have come very close to this individual.

One of those times I wish I had a video camera running, because I'm not sure anyone would believe this otherwise. I'm still not sure I believe it.

Winter always makes you appreciate the Spring so much more. Love getting out for the first time in months. 35 actually feels fast.

Hehe, yeah, I totally agree. With wind-chill, anything faster than walking feels really fast at 35 degrees!

It was actually close to 50 yesterday and today it is supposed to be warmer, but when you haven't ridden in a while, and you are so exposed for the first time in months, zipping down the streets in town, well, mostly it just feels great.

Finally fired up the Buddy last Sunday. We've had pretty good weather for the past two weeks. It's just the temps were a little too cold to risk a scoot that's parked outside. Anything close to -10C, my Kermit won't turn over.

Raining like hell on Sunday. So the only things I could do were pump up the tires a bit, stick in the battery, and crank Kermit a few times. Took a little while for the engine to catch; some judicious use of throttle had it running after a minute or so.

On Monday, I stopped by after work to take it out of my parents garage. The damn bus being late due to probably DST silliness lent a certain urgency to bring Kermit onto the road. After unlocking it from a stanchion, I fired up the starter again. Caught first try. On with helmet, gloves, new riding boots on, jacket zipped...deep breath.

Go. Just like when I'd stopped back in the end of October.

Great to be back.

its been nice here in the Carolina's over the past week and iv made a few long rides... today was about a 75mile ride,,, im sooooo sore i can not lay down... hands,,, back,,, butt,,, legs,,, arms,,, neck,,, everything was so out of shape... old saying::: get up and do the same thing the next day...

i think i will... my Rattler is running sweet at 6222 miles
