Just hit 10k on my 2008 Buddy 50. So far so good. Anything special to watch out for in terms of maintenance issues ?

No! Not even close! Bonegirl put 40k on hers without rings, I've got 27k on mine, you're doing fine in the ring department.

Psst, guys, it's a 50cc. No valves and re-ringing is par for the course. Plenty of 2-stroke oil, though :p
10,000 miles on a Buddy 50 in a year and a half. That's impressive.
Actually, I'm not 100% sure on the no valves bit, lol.

Head-desk. Yeah, I missed that. You might be due for rings....

And yes, no valves on a 2T

That's what I was thinking. I'll bet a lot of the 10K is from getting lost. Boston streets are a maze!

here is what i did on my zuma 50cc horizontal minerllie with 10,000 miles just after a year of ownership
new rings hone the cyl and removed the power robing glob in the exhaust port (why not it was apart)
every thing below should be on the service scheduel in the owners manual
belt
brakes
tires
rollers
clutch springs
i should have replaced the reed valves a few weeks later i noticed she wasnt running just right and there was a very small chip in the reed petal

Thanks guys. In fact I never get lost in Boston, but I drive mostly in Salem / Beverly / Gloucester area.
I'll talk to my mechanic about doing a ring job and put on those brake parts I bought also, soon then.

Forget the rings etc and toss in a new 125cc engine and pretend it's still a 50cc.A nice upgrade.

Nicely done! I'm sure I'm not the only northern rider who is jealous. My Stella has been resting conformably in the garage sine mid November.

So what's the estimate cost of a re-ringing ?

well let see
you will have to take the body parts off
then remove the head
then about 30 seconds to put the new rings on
hone the cyl
put the bore back on
put the plastics back on
if you know what you are doing you should be able to get it done in about an hour
but a lot is going to depend upon your shop they may charge 2 to 3 hours of labor
but the best part about a 2 stroke is if you know what a wrench is you can do most of the maintance on them with a cheap tool kit
so if you were here in wi i would charge you 40 bucks if you brought your scoot to me 20 if you brought beverages

I've got a Buddy 50 that has just hit 9500 miles, and in the last few hundred miles I've noticed a huge loss in power. Is this something that is common?
Was also wondering if this would be a good time to maybe start modifying the engine. As of right now, it is bone-stock.

well the thing with moding you should find out why you have a loss of power before you put any after market parts on
i would first run a compression test if that shows up low then heck yes go right to a bbk if not then figure out why you lost power first
things to consider
fouled plug
bad gas/dirty carb (did it sit much over the winter)
dirty air filter
low compression
chiped or cracked reed
flat spotted rollers
worn belt
low tire preasure
as for selection of bbk i would highly recomend the top performace trophy cast iron 2 ring kit its very reliable and fast(you have to order it out of canada or europe i have yet to find this brand in the states rumor has it sportiqu out of denver might be able to get this brand)

No it hasn't sat for more than a day or two at a time over the winter. It's my daily driver around town. Since I'm on the the east coast, there aren't many hills for me to worry about, but the little inclines here and there makes her really display a loss of power. Know of any place to get a walkthrough for a compression test?

At that mileage: when was the last time you changed your weights? My weights last about 5-6,000 miles. Is it still the original belt? How dirty is the air filter?
Compression test can be done by your dealer, but some of the simpler things you can do yourself. Or you can bring it in to your dealer. Either one.

well for about 10 bucks (for a cheap one good ones about 30 bucks there)you can get a guage at harbor freight
warm the scooter up
pull the spark plug
put the tester on
hold the throtlle wide open
giver her a good kick over
read the guage
less then 90 its time for new rings or bbk
