580 mile ride yesterday

As some may remember, I am hoping to ride an Iron butt "Butt Burner 1000" ride soon. Yesterday I did my last test ride. I clock 581 miles on the Buddy's odometer, door to door. The actual timed part of the ride wound up being 480 miles and I completed it in 11 hours and 40 minutes.

I just 'picked up' a gel seat cushion at W-mart (automotive section) for $20 it's about 17in wide, a tad bib for the Buddy seat but it doesn't 'skid' around, I'm LOVING it should be perfect for your loooooooooooong ride.

It would be really cool if you could do 1000 in 24hrs without the Interstate, but I imagine that's nearly impossible most places unless you're doing laps.

I have to wonder, though, if you're planning on using all 24 hours, how much a factor fatigue will be. I just remember the last leg of our ride back from Amerivespa last year. We'd gone from scenic and cool hilly areas to the coast to the final stretch of suburbia—late afternoon, 100 degrees out, exhausted. If not for being in a group, I'd have probably pulled over for a nap.

I've been planning on getting some kind of gel cushion, just hadn't gotten around to it yet. My butt was definitely feeling a bit raw toward the end of my ride, but today, it's the inside of my thigh muscles that are the most sore.

Eric, I think fatigue will probably be my biggest issue. Driving that many hours, I don't see how it could be otherwise. Stimulant use is a disqualifier for the IBA, so I'll just try to get some extra sleep before I leave. I'm planning on leaving just after nightfall so I don't finish in the dark. I want to do the night portion first.

Another option I'd recommend looking into for seat relief is sheepskin, sheared to 1" or so. I've got one from before my surgical hardware was taken out for pressure relief. I quit using it around the house when I repadded the chairs, but it's about the only thing that works for me when I'm sitting for long periods of time. I had a gel pad back when I was in a wheelchair full-time, but after a few hours it got uncomfortable and was what prompted the sheepskin. Just another option for ya.

I second Cheshires recommendation on sheepskin.I once bought a used car that came with sheepskin seat covers,damn if they wernt the most comfortable material I ever sat on.I know nothing of sheepskin so I looked online for a second and a few people recommend shorn sheepskin over longhair.You can get dense, 1" high, shorn, 100% Australian Merino sheepskin for top comfort.Hope this helps.Good luck whatever you decide.

Fun reading your blog about your marathon ride. Man, my back starts to get sore after a 1/2 hour ride! 500 or 1,000 miles on a scooter is quite an undertaking. Hope you have a hot-tub to soak in afterwards. Would be fun though to take a long ride on country roads. Was in the eastern, rural part of my state this week and wishing I had my scooter!

You might want to look into this product. Dirt bikers use it, even farmers who spend long hours in their tractor seats use it.

I actually have some, although I've never used it. I wear my old cycling shorts under my pants. Bicycling clothes are designed to keep moisture away from you and they do a great job. I am going to look into getting some sheepskin, however.
