New rider-- Insurance policy fun times

Post by Reesh »

I called Geico (my auto and home policies are through them) for Scooter Insurance today and they quoted me what seemed like really really high numbers for insurance. I was including theft coverage and that is what makes the policy so expensive.

Do most of you have theft coverage on your policy? I can't imagine not having it-- would my homeowner's insurance policy cover a theft of a scooter at home perhaps?

Here's what they quoted me:

$660 for 25k uninsured driver coverage and a $1000 deductible on theft
$725 for 50k uninsured driver coverage and a $1000 deductible on theft
$800 something for 50k uninsured driver coverage and a $500 deductible on theft

It's only $250 a year for 25 or 50k (can't remember) uninsured driver coverage and no theft coverage.

Is that crazy expensive? I know I live in one of murder capitals of the country and that living in the city puts my scooter at mega risk, but that seems really high. Maybe it's just how it is. But I already pay $900 a year for auto insurance... i don't need a second massive policy.

Get what you pay for?

I've heard I should check out progressive too.

Call your scooter/m-c shop and have them refer you to an insurance agent who rides. Deal locally with a real person who knows what you need and knows how to get the best buy for you.

$1000 deductible on theft, what's the point?

I dropped Geico when they raised my policy from $70 ish to $100 a year claiming it was the new "minimum".

I know have allstate

Well, I guess the idea is that... even if I'm chipping in 1k, they're still covering another 2.2k ;)

Progressive's quote system seems much more 'scooter' oriented and with a $500 deductible for total loss replacement on collision and theft and the uninsured motorist coverage it was only like $414 a month.

I will probably take IrishTim's advice and see an agent. They might find me something more appropriate.

They won't chip in the leftover ~$2200 unless they are paying full replacement cost. Most comprehensive insurance will factor in depreciation on the vehicle into their payout. They will surely value it at less than the $3200 purchase price, and pay less than $2200.

but within the first 2 years argue that "used" means no warranty which you had and either a) get MORE or b) get a total new one.

I suppose for a new motorcyclist (scooterist really) insurance is bound to be high. $420 a year isn't bad and it comes down to about 30 bucks a month after the initial payment of 60.

I'm not really willing to forgo uninsured motorist coverage as there is most likely a high volume of them driving around st. louis (and a high volume of unskilled uninsured motorists). My homeowners will cover theft from my house, but nowhere else, so I feel like comprehensive coverage should be important too.

Thanks for the pointers everyone!

In Colorado you only need uninsured motorist on one vehicle to cover all vehicles in the family. So I don't have UIM on the scooter. The only exception is if I let someone outside the family drive the scooter. Then they will not be covered by UIM. MO may be the same.

Those prices are insane.

As a new motorcylist, I got $88 a YEAR (liability and comprehensive, no collision) on the Stella- basically it is covered for liability and theft.

Sounds like what Farmers quoted me- about $700 a year.

Don't ever take an un-related, non-household resident as a passenger then. You'd get sued big time if they were hurt in an UM/UIM accident and have nothing to cover them.

I wouldn't bother with theft insurance. Its like the extended warranties on computers. At $600 a year plus 1K deductible, in less than 4 years you've bought a new Scooter. Is your area really that unsafe? Get an alarm and/or better locks.

It MIGHT be "insane", but not necessarily. You do not know how you and the OP compare as far as stuff like age, driving record, maybe credit history, other members of the family and how they might effect the rates, blah, blah, blah.

My rates for my insurance are crazy low, I have no chargeable accidents on my record, I am a middle aged woman, riding around on small scooters, a VW Bug and an old truck, I have several discounts and basically get a really great rate.

Next year, that is all going to change, if my son finds some way to scrounge up the entire first year worth of coverage on my truck. :( :(

Definitely shop around, make sure you are comparing apples-to-apples and if you are going to get telephone or internet quotes I suggest getting those first and then taking them in to talk to at least one local agent, in person, so they can help you to make sure you really are comparing the same things. Make sure you print out for each company what their coverage includes so that this is clear (the basics seem to be pretty typical but not always.)

My insurance agent is a wealth of knowledge and he was able to help me to figure out what I wanted to do. I am fortunate enough to have an agent that puts me first and when he told me that he could not offer the same motorcycle policy coverages that another company offers and told me that the rates he could get for me were slightly higher, he put me in front of his own interest in selling a policy. Of course, because he did that, he has a client for homeowners, life and car insurance forever, because I know he cares more about me getting the protection that I need, than the few bucks he would get from selling me that motorcycle policy.

Also, if your homeowner's insurance company is telling you that your scoot would be covered if it were stolen or damaged as long as it is on your property, I strongly encourage you to get that in writing or have them show you where in your policy that it says motor vehicles are included. My scoot could be sitting in my front room and if my house burned down and the scooter were destroyed the comprehensive coverage on my scooter's motorcycle policy would kick in for the scooter while my homeowner's policy would deal with the rest of it. My homeowner's policy does not cover my motor vehicles for things that an auto policy would provide coverage for. Make sure that you are crystal clear on this and get it in writing if you are going to go with it.

good luck!

Vic's got some good advice. The key point is that you should shop locally and do your own homework (like in the FAQ!).

Comparing my insurance to your's or someone else's is like comparing a Moose to an ice cream cone and a terra-forming device (that hasn't been invented yet that we know of). Insurance differs by region, state, driver history, experience, age, sex... and probably breakfast cereal preference, hair-style and the ability to hold one's breath in a swimming pool filled with Lime Jello (as determined by some random questionnaire). In short: there's entirely too many variables to even attempt to compare insurance rates on a web-forum that covers the entire US and well beyond.

Shop around, ask for a local agent who rides, ask your shop, ask your riding friends. Don't ask strangers 1000 miles away... that's silly.

Thanks for the tips. While Geico has the most information about me as they are my auto and homeowner's insurance provider, their rate is a couple hundred dollars more than the rate the progressive quoted me including a look at all my records.

I will probably find a local agent that is recommended to me and see them on Friday. I don't have any St. Louis scooter friends yet, as I haven't picked up my scooter yet! That's why I asked for general thoughts and tips.

I'm not looking for the best bargain, mostly a reasonable rate with good coverage. Theft coverage is definitely a necessity in St. Louis City. Just one look at the 2 mile radius crime report that comes out every few days is enough to make me look both ways before leaving my house and chaining my scoot to the nearest 24" tree trunk.

Progressive has always given me good rates. I have a $250 deductable on all three scooters and they charge me about $160 a year for the Buddy 50 and the Ruckus and my sh150i will cost me about $400 a year. I have no points on my liscense and have no other drivers listed on my scooters (just me and my wife).
