Modern Buddy

Hi there,

I am considering buying a two-week old Buddy 50 from someone who won it in a drawing. Does anyone know if the warranty/roadside assistance is transferable to me? And, if not, is $1900 a fair price for a new scooter with some scratches but no warranty/assistance? What are the chances I'll end up paying $1000 in repairs over two years?

To answer your first question, the warranty is isn't transferable.

$1900 is MSRP for a new Buddy 50. All you're saving is a couple hundred bucks in taxes, dealer prep fees, etc. You may want to call a local dealer (Sportique in Denver, I think) and ask what their out the door price for a Buddy 50 is.

In the year or so they've been available, the Buddys have proven fairly reliable, with no pervasive mechanical problems. Some members have needed warranty service for minor problems usually due to a bad part of something getting knocked loose in shipping, etc. These can usually be fixed pretty easily, but it may be a couple hundred bucks out of pocket once you take labor into account.

A couple weeks old and it's got scratches? Did it get dropped?

We know the warranty is not transferable but I'm wondering about the status of the title if this Buddy was a prize. If it hasn't been registered, no title has been generated and there's nothing to transfer. You would be the first owner and, thus, entitled to the warranty.

I second Ericalm's advice: give Sportique a call to see if you can get the lowdown. They may have had something to do with the actual contest where the scoot was awarded.

It's funny because the Buddy that I bought, this was the exact case. The guy had won it in some raffle, put 25 miles on it and put it in his garage from August of last year until now. I paid $2000 for it, which I think was a really good deal because both dealers I talked to said I would be close to $3000 out the door.
Anyway, I do have a question though. He did have it registered in his name, so I am not the "first" owner. I know that I don't get the warranty now (almost a year of it would be up by now anyhow), but does Genuine offer some sort of additional or extended warranty I could purchase? I still plan on taking it out to the dealer when I hit 500 miles for the first oil change and check up, maybe I will ask them about it then.

I wonder if you could just have your buddy keep it registered in his name until the warranty period is up? maybe just add you as a rider on the insurance so everything is legal and then transfer it over when the warranty expires........oh wait this is a buddy 50 were talking about right? no license or insurance is required...........I would just keep it in his name until the warranty is over.........if it breaks have him take it in for you..buy him lunch or something..........just a thought.............

I think trevo_man's buddy is a 125...

Though I probably wouldn't buy used nor sell my Buddy, I think the warranty should be transferable. My friend bought her Vespa used with 242 miles on it and both the warranty and roadside assistance was transferred to her. Also my Met's warranty was transferable.

Wonder why Genuine doesn't do the same? Or as trevo-man mentioned if an extended warranty is offered they (Genuine) can make some money on the sale of an extended warranty. Who owns the scooter shouldn't matter, especially if Genuine wants to uphold their excellent support of their product claim.

Your dealership might offer a warranty you could purchase from them. I bought a second Buddy used, and the dealership had quoted the seller that the buyer could purchase a warranty for $3-400. Sorry, I don't remember the specifics.

this may not be a good idea for the original owner. what if the *new* owner had an accident which caused damage to someone/thing, and it ends up in a lawsuit? who gets sued? the rider or the owner of the vehicle? or both? the registered, legal owner would be responsible.

also, if you add someone to your insurance, are you then also able to be sued, should the occasion arise?

so if you're contemplating doing this as a seller, i'd really checkout the legal ramifications before hand.

Yes, It was a Buddy 125. I have already gotten the title in my name, registered it, gotten it insured and gotten my M endorsement. But, hopefully that $3-400 warranty exists where I am. Not that I don't trust the Buddy, I just like to have all my more expensive purchases covered just in case!

my scooter store sold me an extended warranty when i bought my red 07 new so my warranty is 5 years unlimmited miles. my warranty was 1200.
