Steering Lock

I accidentally discovered the steering lock on my Buddy when I parked it for a quick 3 mile jaunt around the local park. I was so unaware of this feature that I thought I may have damaged the key mechanism by turning it that far!

Anyway, I had no idea how to unlock the steering lock and quickly discovered that, while it mentions how to lock it, the handbook does not explain how to UNlock it! It took a bit of fumbling around but I got it unlocked.

My dilemma now is that I cannot seem to turn the key that far to lock it again! I've tried pushing the key in (popping my seat open) and keeping it "out" but neither allows me to lock the steering. I seem to only do it by accident and never catch the exact way that it happens.... Can anyone provide help?

To use the steering lock you don't press in and turn left. You first turn the handlebars to the left and then turn the key left to the lock position.

The confusing part is that if you turn the bars all the way to the left the lock doesn't engage.

You need to turn the bars all the way to the left and then just slightly back to the right while turning the key to the lock position, then the locking mechanism will engage.

Peace,
sdw

Thanks guys. I had tried turning the handle but it didn't help. I'll try turning it "not quite" all the way!

I usually just turn the handlebars all the way to the left and jiggle it a little bit as I'm turing the key.

it takes a while to get used to. i found that if you turn the handlebar all the way to the left, then turn it back maybe about an inch or so, that seems to be the sweet spot.

i'm beginning to think that it might not be a bad idea to have a thread with all the little how-tos for the buddy, with pictures and or video because sometimes it's just so much easier to just show instead of going round and round trying to describe it. i'll see if can take a little movie clip and post it for you.

I was able to do it today. Just takes a little "wiggle" to work it into the right place....
