Confused about wiring for new horns...

Post by Drumwoulf »

When a relay has to be added to the Buddy for a horn like the Stebel or another super loud blaster, where does it go? Can it be put on one of the old horn's existing two wires?

Some of the diagrams I've seen show a new wire and special relay added and going directly to the battery terminal from the horn. That seems like a bit of a complicated project to me, no?

Or am I missing something here? :?

Thanks,
Namaste,

I just hooked up the stebel horn a week or two ago and I wired it per the instructions. A wire directly from the battery with a fuse........then it connects to the Relay which I also just left that in the battery compartment, it does fit along with the fuse....its not that hard to do but you must use the right wiring and connectors or you are asking for trouble down the road.........I love the new horn and now I can be heard, have not HAD to use it yet but I imagine I will at some point..........With my old horn hooked up I have almost been ran over two times now.........a big Delivery truck and some chic talking on her cell phone who decided to change lanes which cut me off and she did not signal.........she about wet herself when I pulled up along side her passenger side door about 2 feet from her car.........she had no idea I was there.......as for the big truck. same scenario........no signal and just changed lanes and that one was a close one..........I can attest to the braking of the buddy........IT WORKS........I locked up the front wheel and skidded towards the median.......if anyone gets in a similar situation be carefull not to apply to much front brake as that has sigificantly more GRAB or stopping power than the rear drum break.......I am glad I experienced that so now I know what to do in the future in a similar situation...........and now that I have the stebel the PERP and everyone around me will hear me ROAR!!!!!!! LOL! I know that was not what you were asking but I felt like sharing! take care.........

It's really not as complicated as it seems. I am sure you can manage it - I did. If you go with the Stebel, lay out all the parts first on the ground (or table) just the way they are in the schematic. It will start to make sense as you look at all the wires and stuff and think about placement in your scooter.

A little bit, yeah, but the payoff is that it protects your scooter's existing electrical wiring from damage that can be caused by pulling more current through it than it was meant to carry. The switch and the connectors in the existing horn circuit aren't meant to carry the extra current the Stebel requires, so it's a really good idea to go ahead and wire in the relay.

Also, you'll gain a bunch of street cred when you tell everybody you "had to wire in a relay to handle the extra current your Stebel horn pulls." I mean, is that sexy technical talk or what?
