New Competition for our Buddy

Post by pcbikedude »

I was looking at my local Buddy dealer's website. They started carrying a sexy new thing 8) from Taiwan... I meant the scooter you dogs. :P

http://www.lambrettausa.com/default.aspx

I would like to see a review comparing it with the Buddy.

The due 50 is downright ugly. The uno line looks kinda generic sporty scooter. My opinion eh,

Does anyone know if this is an outsourced Italian scooter or a company trying to be faux Italian? Trying to grab some Vespa magic?

Looks like it'll be made by CMSI same people who make TNG ugh. I wonder who designed them, because there's nothing that makes them standout from the other plastic scooters, except maybe the due50's ugliness. I mean if they kept some lambretta heritage like a fixed front cowl even that would be at least somewhat cool, but sadly no, they're just trying to use a name. I also hear they will be making a truly retro scooter though.

I WAS, however, intrigued by the 4 valve head...

Buddy is perfection and you can't improve on perfection.

The UNO/DUO has alien looking head between grips.

These are actually Asian scoots (the Taiwanese Adly) using the licensed Lambretta name. They have nothing at ll in common with vintage Lammys. These scoots have been discussed quite a bit over on ModernVespa and other scooter sites and for the most part have received a pretty unfavorable response. This isn't just because they're Asian, but because they're simply an existing scoot being rebadged with a beloved name.

There is another "new Lambretta" in the works which is being built by CMSI, which made the TN'Gs. This is now known as the "L-Series" and is still in the prototype phase. Those who have seen or sat on previous prototypes have had very mixed reactions. Apparently, the back is so wide you'd have to be bowlegged to ride it, though they're supposedly working on that particular design flaw.

Reminds me of a quote I saw on one of the other scooter forums I frequent...

WTF?!! -THOSE scoots are supposed to be Lambrettas? -They look more like the ill fated Argos that were supposed to replace the Chetaks... UGH!

If you want to see a review that at least tried to be kind to these kinds of scoots, check out the edition of Scoot magazine that reviewed the Argos. Disapointing, they said.. :!: (Especially after their having reviewed the excellent Buddy in the previous issue! ) :P

Although the new Lambrettas (made in taiwan = quality) are far from their original italian style... It is promising to see what Lambretta will do in the future. I believe that it is worth admiring these new scoots. The uno150 features a 4 valve 150 with a comparable price to the buddy that might just hold some competition in the current market.

How about this as the Buddy competition? Price a little more for MSRP $3500 with more power and BEAUTIFUL IMHO.

Its the Aprilia Mojito 150.

I should think that an MSRP that is almost a thousand bucks more puts it square in the "NOT COMPETITION" catagory. The low price of the Buddy is one of the things that makes it's quality so amazing. Ain't no such thing as a low priced Aprilia...no matter HOW purty it is.

Been around a long time. Uses a Piaggio engine. Decent power and comfort. Not much protection in bad weather. Pretty.

You can find some on Bikez, and a few in Europe. I would write one, but I'm too busy riding around. <<< AKA Lazy :P

Just a quick note on the subject The Mojito sits lower than the Buddy but is a bit heavier. Not as zippy as the Buddy, but handles very well. Of all the scoots I test rode;
Fly 150
LX150
People 150
Buddy 125
Vino 125

This was what fitted me the best, though the Buddy was a very close second with the Vino dead last.

At slow speads I would give the advantage to the Buddy, having a shorter wheel base and being lighter, but after 40mph, the Mojito handles best. The larger tyres and "Harley" handle bars make this a much more stable ride at 55+. Top speed is higher and the speedometer actually works!! Though you have to wait 10 weeks to get a rear lugage rack!

OH the Ladies dig it.
