Buddy 50 - Dead Starter but Good Battery

Post by gkenley »

Buddy Group,

I bought a Buddy 50 about 3 months ago and It is great for riding around the city streets. I left it for about 3 weeks and of course the battery went dead. Read about the Buddy batter, bought a battery tender and multimeter and got it charged again. However the Starter no longer works. Easy to kick start but electric starter is no longer working. Read about the rules for disengaging and engaging the battery - Negative off first, positive back on first etc.
Any clue as to why the Electric Starter is no more? Any tests that I can do to better isolate the problem? Thanks for any help.

The Buddy needs to have at least one brake engaged (more specifically, at least one brake light switch) to engage the electric start. See if squeezing the other brake lever changes anything. Also see if your brake lights come on when you squeeze either side, to rule out the brake light switches. Obviosly the battery needs at least some power to do this test.

Did you buy the scoot new or used?

I would still try and rule out the battery before moving on. What is the voltage when fully charged (with the scoot off)? And when at idle?

A battery on the tender can say fully charged even when the cells are damaged.

Once started, do the horn and blinkers work ok?

If it's a deceased battery, you should be able to jump-start the scooter from a car battery. Don't start the car (that would produce more current than you need), just hook up the jumper cables (red to red, black to black) and try the scooter starter.

Or take the scoot or the battery by a shop that will test the battery for you. Many shops will check it for free.
