Buddy 125 Gear Oil Change

Post by thumbuddy »

1438 miles so I changed the gear oil. I originally changed it at 187 miles. I ran it for a few minutes and drained it. The used oil coming out was frothy, so thinking that I may have gotten some water in there, I filled, ran and drained three times. Each time I drained the new oil it was also frothy. Bel-Ray SAE 85W-140 Gear Saver Hypoid. Should I be using something else?

Seems weird that it is frothy. Don't know why or how water could be getting in there. I refurb outboard motors and I see water in those lower units all the time. But they are under water. Are you over filling or under filling it? Metty

I would use 80w90 hypoid, but the 140 won't hurt anything...Its probably frothy from the gears aerating it as they spin. They are mixing air in...That would be my guess after 3 changes you should have gotten any water by now. Want to be sure, throw some ATF tranny oil in there for 5 minutes and drain it.It will "grab" any water better than a hypoid.
Speed is only a matter of money...How fast do you want to go?

Not sure what you mean by "frothy" but water in the gear oil will appear distinctly milky - not golden brown like clean oil.
