Shipping my scooter- need to drain the fuel

Post by jmazza »

My scooter is hopping on a moving van in a couple of days bound for Colorado. I know that I need to drain all the gas but I don't know how. I'm sure it's very easy but if someone could explain it to me in simple steps that would be great (pictures are a bonus).

Unless I ride tomorrow (which I don't think is happening), my Florida riding days are over and I won't ride at sea level again for a long time!

Thanks in advance for any help!

Looking at the carb from left side of bike there is a small screw at the very bottom of the Carb. There is a small rubber hose that runs right next to the screw and exits below the airbox. Loosening the screw will drain the fuel out of the rubber hose.

Holy carp! I totally missed your thread about moving to Colorado. Good luck with the move and your new life. If you gotta move outta SoFla, that's a pretty good destination. Once you get all rejetted and stuff, you'll love riding there. I dare you to ride your Buddy up the Mount Evans road.

Are they planning on rolling the truck or is this some insurance requirement?

We had a scooter shipped to us from across the US and it had gas in the tank - not full, just maybe 2 liters, yet no problems.

We also have transported scooters across state lines and across Texas and never once have drained a tank.

I am thinking we are missing something. :?

Yeah, are you sure you have to drain it? I've shipped cars across the US inside those moving vans and they all had gas in the tank.

Hey Joe where you moving to in Colorado. My son lives in a suburb of Denver Broomfield I think is the name of it. If you take your pet carrier out I think you can easily get the hose loose that runs from your tank to your carb and drain it in to a small gas can and then drain your carb is how I would do it. Good luck with the move Colorado has some beautiful scenery.

Thanks for all the responses everyone. I'm pretty certain the agent said the scooter needed to be empty but I'll wait to see what the driver says.

And, vabeancounter, Broomfield is exactly where I'm going! Beautiful out there for sure.

Which screw? Is it visible in any of these pics?

(These are my "remember where everything goes" pics from pulling the carb in our Buddy but that was some time ago!)

I wouldn't drain it. We moved 2 of our scoots with a professional mover and did not drain the gas. Got both very low though.

Interesting. This recently came up in terms of my Buddy and my mechanic said to siphon it out the old-fashioned way - sucking on a tube.

Siphoning will get most of it out. I've done it to get rid of old gas.

To really empty the tank, you need to do it from the fuel hose or carb.
