San Diego to LA. Any suggested routes?

Over the next couple of weeks I will need to ride from SD (otherwise known as Whales Vagina) to LA. Does anyone have any recommended routes to ride? I'm taking the Italia so the least freeways the better.

Cheers.

Only way is to head inland as there is no freeway-free route near the coast. It is a pretty long detour. Unless you know someone on the military base who can get you passage through there.

essentially get to the Hwy 74/Oretga any way you want, inland. like up the coast, to the 76 - I can't remember all the streets that took us into Fallbrook and on to Lake Elisnor. But you get to the 74 and head west. It drops you off at the PCH in San Juan Capistrano.

there's a dude in the SD Scooter Squadron meet up that rides a 50cc there all the time. Check out the SD Scooter Squadron for more detailed maps and route discussions. I've only done it once and my friend bought a truck so now we HAUL to LA so we're not too pooped to ride once there :)

My planned trip from Tucson to Berkeley.

I have planned out my route from Tucson, AZ to Berkeley, CA. I specifically planned it to go through San Diego and follow the coast as closely as possible. Here is a Google map of my expected route:

Take a look and see if it gives you any ideas.

I don't know how I would feel about taking the 5N through camp pedleton on a scooter. Cars speed through there. 85+mph is the norm there.

In reality, at 148cc the Italia 150 isn't actually freeway legal in So-Cal if that is a consideration.

Thats not to say you cant get there from here, it just makes it more interesting.

I'm afraid you're going to have to rethink some of your route. 125cc scooters are not allowed on highways on California. 150cc scooters are freeway legal but are nowhere near fast enough to be safe travelling them.

yeah, you can't be on Interstate 5 with a 125 buddy. I don't recommend it on a 150 either. Traffic moves at around 80mph despite the 65mph speed limit. That pavement is groove, catching out 3.5 wheels pretty easily.

Now, what's weird about SD is that the 101/Pch is called a bunch of different things depending on where you pick it up. I can map it for you from SD proper if you want.

You can hug the coast from about La Jolla to Oceanside. Oceanside to Orange County is Camp Pendleton - I think like 30-40miles? and your only options are through Pendleton with the Marine's permission (hard to get), around Pendleton - go way inland or risking it on I-5 through Marine Country proper. Few 150s are nuts enough to try it!

I don't know about I5 in California, but hundreds of miles on I-8 in AZ? I shudder to think of it.
