Winter Storage: Help!

Post by addamoose »

Hey out there! First post! I have a 2009 Stella up here in Syracuse and it's been unseasonably warm until now, so I've been continuing to ride once every few weeks. I think the time has finally come to put her away for the season, and I'm not sure what to do with her before she goes into the shed for the winter. I just got her in the summer and since then I've put a little over 700-750 miles on her. She will be in a garage or some other covered space if any of that info helps!

Search the forum for the term "winterize" and you'll find lots of discussion of this topic. The main two things to do are stabilize your fuel and tender your battery. There are a number of products you can use to stabilize your fuel. The easiest to find is Stabil, available at any auto parts store, or pretty much any place that sells automotive stuff. More popular around these parts is Seafoam, but it's a little more challenging to find. Either will work for this purpose, but Seafoam seems to have mystical all-purpose scooter repair properties, at least if you read any of the "my scooter is doing x.." posts around here . Add stabilizer to a full tank and maybe run it for a bit to get it into the system. For your battery, get yourself a battery tender; Battery Tender Junior seems to be the product of choice. If you can't plug it in where you're storing it, remove the battery and bring it inside to tender it.

2 more things. Fill the tank full with stabilized fuel. This is a minor thing, but it allows less room for air in the tank, air that can collect moisture, condensation and rust :)... And since its a stella. Run it for a few minutes to get the stabilied fuel into the carb. THEN turn the petcock to off and run it till it runs out of fuel in the carb. Startron is a third choice in fuel stabilizers, its what I'm trying this winter

Hoping spring comes soon :)

Remember to use the correct does of all these potions - for Sea Foam, it's just over an oz in a full tank. Put it in first and then go fill it up -- get it home and turn the petcock off -- wait until it dies and you're good to go!

Also think about changing your oil if it's dirty, good luck!

It also helps to spray all the chrome surfaces with WD-40. You should stuff a small rag in the tailpipe to keep moisture out, just remember to remove it when you are ready to ride in the spring. Use center-stand and make sure you are parked where water won't settle by thoe tires. Also, in the spring before the first ride, check all fluid levels, tire pressure, and fill top off the tank of gas.
