O.K. so I'm gonna see if I can save a few bucks and do my oil change myself. Just cos the M/C shop in my area seem a bit dodgy and I don't want to rent a truck to take my scoot all the way to NoHo just for an oil change + It will let me learn something new.

My question is: Where do I put the oil filter on a 170i and what tools do I need to go and get to accomplish a successful oil change?

It's not terribly difficult.
There's a tutorial with photos for the 125 hereabouts which has everything you need to know - things are just in slightly different places on the 150s and 170s.
if it's like my 150, then instead of being mounted on the crankcase like the 125, the oil filter should be beside the oil cooler, which on the 170 is mounted up forward of the battery box.
I followed the tutorial successfully in less than an hour, including the gear oil change.

Just remember to oil the oil filter gasket! Its real easy. I started doing it myself for the same reasons you are. -$

It's more of a location factor for me. As I live an hour and a half away from any decent scoot shop.

Whatever the motivation, it's good to know how to change oil.

This reminds me!
I have a total photo-write-up DIY for oil and gear oil changes on the 170i that I never got around to posting! I'll put it up tomorrow, Drum Pro, so if you can wait that long it should be of help!

You'll find it's not too tough.
Check out this video. It shows a Buddy oil change and gear oil change amongst other things.
