Introduction and a question~

Hi everyone! My name is Kara~ I just purchased my first scooter - a black Buddy 125 - off Craigslist! I'm suuuuper excited to get riding it, and I'm really glad that I found this community of scooter lovers!

My main question today is about helmets. The day after I purchased my scooter, I saw this bad-ass bitch on a motorcycle, who just looked so cool! I knew right then that I HAD to have the same helmet, but I have no idea what brand it is or anything! OTL It was a full-face helmet made of a velvety-black material with a black face shield. It had a nice smooth curve to it- very sleek and modern and sharp, with no bumps or grooves. Any idea what this could be?

Second, do you have any recommendations for gear (jacket, gloves, etc) for a tiny 5'0 fashionista? I want to be safe and warm but also fashionable?

Thanks for your help! I look forward to talking to all of you! :D

Welcome!!

I don't know what kind of helmet you saw but jackets I know about. You should check out the Corazzo web site. They are a little expensive but I love them.....stylish but with armor.

hello and welcome, fellow black buddy 125 owner! what year is it? and have you named it?

was the helmet something like this?

as far as gear goes - i'm not sure about fitting a person of your tiny stature (but seemingly tall personality! :) ), but i think Corazzo is probably the most-represented brand in the scooterist world:

Wow! Thanks for the quick replies! I'm definitely liking what I'm seeing on the Corazzo site! I'll definitely have to save up for it, though! /poor college student.

Black Sunshine - (hey, our usernames are similar! haha  ) Mine is a 2009, and I have not named it yet! It's actually been like 2 years since I've last ridden, so I'm more worried about getting my confidence back up enough to ride in traffic right now hahaha. Hopefully that'll happen this weekend so I can then focus on finding a perfect name for it! :D

Actually, the face shield on the helmet was much bigger and... rounder (I guess?) And the shape in general was more egg shaped... like it was less round at the top/back.

Like a cross between these, kind of:

(I definitely want a large face shield to have as much vision as possible!)

Kara,

Welcome! This is an awesome scooter forum, and is 1200x more awesome if you own a Buddy.

Also, congrats on going full face. I know that some people hate them, but I've already had gravel hit me where my teeth would be, so full face it is.

Corazzo is also great stuff, that I've seen.

Amazon does carry a TON of good jackets, problem is I like to try things on first. You probably have a local motorcycle dealer that has lots of good jackets. If you live in a major area, go have a look see what you like, and then see how close it is to buying it online. I always like to support my local stores, but if the price difference is huge, too bad.

depending on where you live, you'll probably also need cool weather riding gear, rain gear, etc, but buying some stuff here and there is pretty satisfying.

Welcome!

The helmet finish you're looking for will probably be called "black matte" or "black rubberized." You might do best trying to identify the model by shape/appearance, then looking for the color.

I'd start at some of the larger retailers, such as Motorcycle Superstore, MotorcycleGear.com or Cycle Gear. There are dozens that are similar in shape to what you described!

Of course, it's best to try and find a helmet locally first so you can try it on. They're definitely not all the right shape for different heads. And if you find it in another color and it fits, a retailer can probably get you the black rubberized.

GoGo Gear (http://www.scooter-girls.com/) is another possible source for "fashionista" jackets. I've seen some good deals on ebay and Amazon as well -- discontinued lines or jackets that people realized didn't really fit. I bought a Corazzo jacket on-line and I found that the measurements they list for sizes on their website matched pretty well with what I got (M and S).

Welcome to Modern Buddy and welcome back to scooter riding! It sounds like you have a great scoot and are ready to go...

<Old man rant>
You may want to consider a brighter color for your helmet. Especially with a black scoot and the fact that the helmet is the highest point on the scooter. It's a great place to stick a high-viz or even a plain white helmet, that is, if you want to be seen. Some club mates give me some stick, but I think that my scooters (white, red, gold and light blue) plus my helmet (white) and my hi-viz vest have probably saved me more times than I know. I too am tempted by "the dark side" especially the winter (black helmets are warmer in the sun), but the safety aspects always point me back to white. And I look like a cop! Every little bit of safety counts!

Ride safe, have fun!

OH MY JESUS THOSE JACKETS ARE PERFECT!!! AND THEY HAVE KEVLAR JEANS, TOO??? There goes my next couple paychecks! hahaha

A lot of you have mentioned Amazon. I'll check around there, too! :]

skully93- Yes, I definitely don't want my pretty face to get messed up~

ericalm- That's a good idea; don't want to order something without at least getting an idea of what's right for me. :) Then I'll check around those shops you linked me, too.

Rippinyarn- That is a good point. My ideal scooter would have been in orange, but I got a good deal on mine, so I figure with the money I saved on this one, I can save up for the brighter color later. In the mean time I suppose I should at least get something that's more visible!

Thanks for all the advice everyone! Here's another question: What is the virtue of a bluetooth helmet? Recommend? Don't recommend? I don't really call people that much, mostly text, but I suppose it's a lot harder to sneak a text at a red light while on a scooter, so maybe calling will be more convenient?

And this might be a stupid question, but how about listening to music while riding? (Obviously I'd wait till I had a lot more experience before I tried it)

OH MY GOSH I LOVE IT!! The colors are so nice and bright and happy and the design is really cool! Most helmets with designs I've seen have been really.... cheesy and douchey. Like they were designed at a 3rd-rate tattoo parlor or something haha. I really really like it! Dang, if I could find an awesome one like that, I'd definitely have no problem getting a nice bright one for safety reasons!

Wahh now I feel like such a noob. I'm sure there are lots of cool ones out there if you know where to look! Uwaah~ @A@

I remember somebody telling me that the bluetooth technology in helmets is meant specifically for helmet intercoms and won't hook up to a cel phone's bluetooth. Lokky has a pair of $30 SkullCandy brand helmet earphones for his mp3 player- I think they're originally meant for bicycling and he got them at Dick's or REI, but he rarely uses them. They can be hard to fit into a helmet that fits snugly and properly (his new FF doesn't really have space). Personally, as much as I love music, not being able to hear road noises would scare me, so I've tried nothing of the sort.

As for helmets, I wore a Fulmer, but I'm a big fan of Scorpion's Evo line. I don't know how much you plan on dropping, but the Evo 900 (I think) he just got is pretty sweet looking, it's got a flip down visor and everything, and it's modular, so you can flip it up if you need to.

I've had a terrible time with jackets and won't advise on them, except to say that I dearly wish I had the money to try out some of GoGo's stuff. Corazzo's stuff looks nice too, and since you live in sunny CA you may not have the problems I had with the Corazzo I tried out.

According to their specs, at least, BT helmet rigs conform to the recent standards, typically supporting stereo audio. Phone connectivity (smart or dumb) should really be no problem these days.

The prudent move might be to buy a BT kit that can be moved to one helmet or another, rather than a dedicated helmet, which really limits your choices for fit and color, not to mention huge $$. If you get more than one helmet, you may want the flexibility (a local club leader here has something like 15 helmets).

The nicer kits have both BT support for phones, GPSs, and music players, but also a good intercom radio. BT is only good for 10 meters or so, whereas the good kits like Scala can reach half a mile.

I'd add Revzilla to the list that ericalm posted. I highly recommend calling them if you have any questions about fitment. They know their stuff and have a great return policy.

If you're looking for an inexpensive but decent full face, look at the HJC CL-16. 99 bucks and it's DOT and Snell 2010 (which matters for smaller heads). No funky graphics but you can put stickers on it. I have a white helmet (better for being seen per scientific research) with retro-reflective stickers (reflects light back when hit with headlights).

Decent gear brands to look at that won't leave you completely broke:
FirstGear
Olympia
Alpinestars
Rev'It (Euro cut...fits thin individuals really well)

If you look at motorcyclegear.com, you'll find good deals. Now is the time to be looking as manufacturers are bringing out their 2012 lines and discounting the 2011 stuff.

It's hot in Orange so you may want to consider a good mesh jacket first and then, when it's "cold", you can layer or look for a textile jacket. I live in New England so my main jacket is textile and when it's hot here, I have a mesh, but that only gets worn a couple months of the year.

Don't forget good gloves and boots!

I would also recommend armoured motorcycle pants but a lot of people think that's overkill. If you read the "Who's Crashed" thread, a lot of the injuries are to the legs and feet because there's no protection. I would not commute without impact protection on my knees. There are crazies out there and you can filter in California!

I also love Scorpion Exo helmets. Pricey, but well worth it. I got last year's exo 1000 for $199 and I love it. The inbuilt sunvisor that still fits over my glasses rules.

Scorpion also has a modular design that after seeing it person, feels pretty solid. I might try one of those one day so I can open it up during the summer when I hit a long light or something.

I'm a big fan of solid color helmets now, but I'm also in my mid-30's. Most of the graphics would have been OK for me 10 years ago but now they just irritate me :D.

Whenever I get grief about a full-face, I point to my face and say "but this is my meal ticket!".

+1. I hated my old moto-x helmet because it was covered with one of those sorts of designs, but I got it for free when I bought my atv, so I'm not going to complain. When I sold my other bikes and the atv, I sold the helmet with them.

I'll add another place to look online to the list, Leatherup.com.
They have really reasonable prices and most of their gear is awesome.
My first jacket was $65 (I had a coupon), and got amazing reviews from people who had worn it through crashes and such. It has level-3 armor on the elbows, shoulders and a nice back pad.
This is my first one:
Image
http://leatherup.com/p/Womens-Motorcycl ... 54126.html
It's a little bit power ranger-y, but it's not terrible looking, and it gets the job done.
The second one is the black and grey mesh Xelement jacket ($59.95 +tax and shipping), but I haven't had a chance to try it yet since I got it for christmas, and it's been rather chilly up here in NY.

The reviewers also give you a great idea of how something will fit too.
A lot of people go into pretty good detail about why or why not they kept or returned things they ordered, or how well something held up in a crash. Helmets are pretty much the same deal, and most of the measurements are spot on.

My Modular-FF from HAWK is bright-effing-pink and it was about $95 with tax and such.
This one:
Image
http://leatherup.com/p/Motorcycle-Modul ... 12974.html
Which also comes in matte black. I love it, I have great visibility all around and it has excellent ventilation. I don't experience too much wind noise either.
My other helmet is a half helmet, and I'm looking to get a dual-visor 3/4 open face this year as well. The half helmet fits great and is a good helmet for what it is... it's just not the safest thing ever, even though it is DOT approved.

They also have a great return and exchange policy if you find something you ordered doesn't fit you quite right. FF helmets will probably set you back $10-$15 for return shipping through the post office, that's about it.

I have ordered two jackets, two helmets, goggles, and a couple of other accessories from them and everything has been great so far. My bf ordered the same Mod-FF that I have in a larger size and matte balck color, but it didn't quite close without squishing his chin, so he returned it and ordered one locally. Zero hassle.

When I can/have time, I buy stuff at local shops, but I don't have many to choose from (a Harley dealership and a couple powersports shops), and sometimes you really can't beat the prices at the online stores.

EDIT: I wanted to add that I did purchase a Corazzo women's "Hoodie" jacket from another MB member last year, and that is awesome too. I haven't gotten a chance to use it much, because I got it late in the season, and it seems like more of a spring jacket for this area. Like others have said, they are fantastic jackets, and if you can find them gently used it's a bit easier on your pockets! :)

EDIT 2: You also might want to think about a helmet with a "dual visor" design (like mine) instead of just a dark tinted face shield if you plan on/happen to find yourself riding in darkness. There are some out there that you can purchase differently tinted (or not tinted at all) shields, that are easy to switch out when necessary, but in my experience it gets pricey quick, and there's always the possibility of breaking something in the process.
It's not so easy riding any kind of motorcycle wearing suuuunglasses at night. 8)

EDIT 3: On listening to music, my bf and I have the Cardo Scala Rider power set.
http://www.cardosystems.com/scala-rider ... 4-powerset
They have little flat speakers that velcro to the padding on the inside of your helmet, so road and traffic noise can still get to your ears. They have a built in FM radio, and can be linked to your cell phone and function via voice commands, or you can use any cell phone-based radio-type service, and/or as intercoms between riders. I have tune-in and pandora on my phone, so if I'm on a long boring stretch of a trip I use those for music. For day to day riding I don't, because the dangers of what I might not hear outweigh my desire to listen to music. Also, if you are using it for music AND as an intercom, when someone talks to you, it will stop your music and play their voice so you don't miss anything. I can't really tell all of the stuff it does, so if you're interested you can check out the link. They're definitely pretty handy.
Oh, GPS, that was the other thing. If you have GPS on your phone it will tell you the directions through your speakers.

I love Scorpion EXO and they don't have to be expensive. The lower models (I wear an EXO 400) can be found for stupid cheap (as low as $80) on SportBikeTrackGear.com.

In my crash, I hit my head hard on the median at around 50mph and didn't even have so much as a headache after it. I'll probably wear Scorpion forever.

I also agree on the bright helmet thing. I had a black helmet, then a silver one and now a white one. I've been told that the difference in visibility is quite big.

As for listening to music - it's a controversial issue and not legal in some places. I used to do it. I made some in-helmet speakers out of a pair of over the ear headphones velcro'd to the interior ear pockets of my helmet. Not being earbuds, they allowed for external sounds to get in and kept me legal in FL. I've since moved to CO and haven't checked the laws and haven't installed anything in my new helmet but, personally, I haven't found music to be a problem. I think it really depends on the person. I tend to focus more when I have some background music- my mind and attention wanders more with out it. But you'll find equal opposite opinions.

Welcome to ModernBuddy and glad you're asking great questions!

I myself have a hojillion albums, and even though I put only the 'very best' on my ipod at a time, I still have music ADD. I'd hate it. Besides, I like to ride to experience the road! But I think as long as you don't crank it and can pay attention you're prolly ok. I do believe in CO it is illegal, but no one seems to care. I see idiots in cages with huge headphones on all the time.

They're going to be on Shark Tank this season. :)

I'm friends with the owners and have done some work for them. If I can drop by before they leave town, I'll have a new men's jacket to test next week!

Not sure where you are in the OC, but there is great place to helmet shop in Fullerton right off the 91. http://www.motorhelmets.com/

They have an insane selection - pretty much every brand that is not an exclusive. Prices are competitive. They have jackets, gloves etc but lean more toward the typical motorcycle styles as opposed to scooters.

Here's a picture of the Scorpion EXO-700 in a matt black finish.

I prefer the EXO-900 transformer helmet (though I never use it in any configuration other than full face. It comes in that matt black as well. I started out with the shiny black one, but after the woman pulled out the blind driveway in front of me in the rain, causing me to total my scooter a couple years back, when Scorpion came out with the neon yellow version I bought that one. The EXO-900 is one of the heaviest modular helmets on the market, but really, you don't notice the weight after the first couple of times you ride. I bought a dark tinted visor to replace the lightly tinted ones they come with.

I bought my high viz jackets after the wreck too.

My gear may not be termed "fashionable" by some, but both jackets are high viz yellow: Scorpion Women's Fury and Firstgear Women's Mesh-Tex for spring, summer & fall), and I feel I can give most of the credit to people not pulling out in front of me to the fact that I wear it...it's hard to miss someone in bright yellow. Of course I still ride like I'm invisible, but it's nice to have this extra edge of visibility.

Regarding blue tooth, I have the scala rider Q2 multi-set, and you can absolutely use them with your blue tooth compatible cell phone. I pair my Blackberry to it all the time when I ride. I ride wearing earplugs, so the volume is just perfect. When my husband and I ride, and we use the intercom feature, we need to crank the volume to be able to hear with our earplugs in, but it works. I don't know how we did without them now... :)

Yes, I'm thinking of at least getting a bright red helmet or something now... Honestly I really wanted the bright orange Buddy, so that would definitely have been good for visibility, but I got a good deal on the black on on craigslist, so now I have to rethink what gear I want... (Until I can save up for the scooter I really want, that is!)

Thanks for the blue tooth suggestion! :)

I had a black Buddy 125 before, really liked it, and would get another if I had room in the garage for another scooter. Somewhere I have a picture taken when I was on a group ride (riding the black Buddy) wearing my yellow jacket and helmet and I thought it looked pretty good.

IMO high viz is important no matter what you are riding, but even more so if you are on a black scooter.

Two things:

1. One can purchase removeable reflective bands (also called "halos") from most online accessory stores and many brick and mortar. This makes the black helmet very visible at night.

2. You can google black matte helmet and/or other variations of this, then do the search but specify "images" and spend the rest of the day browsing through lots of helmet pics till you find it.

Just a thought.

Happy Riding,
Kirk

I got some reflective decals that are black in daylight but silver reflective when hit with a directly light. I put them on my husband's black helmet, and he is instantly more visible at night.
