So today I came back to my Stella, parked between two other scooters, to find this

Anybody knows if it can be mended by welding in a way that won't be a hazard in case of a crash (i.e. break off again and skewer me) or if I should start looking for a replacement crashbar?

Repairing it is fairly straight forward. A welding shop can insert a piece of smaller tuubing and weld the break. It will be stronger than the original. Repairing the chrome would be more trouble. Much easier to just paint the repair silver if that is acceptable.

I was wondering how moisture got in to cause that kind of damage, looked closer at the pic and there is a small crack in the chrome about middle of the break.
You may want to do a removal and inspection of the rest of the bar to check for any others. Hell what good is a crash bar if it breaks into pieces during a crash.

^^^ precisely what he said :). Thats a straightforward repair.

Spray the fresh weld with cold galvanize. Let it cool and then paint it silver.
