What was that noise?!

Post by TVB »

On my way to work this morning as I approached the side street where The Office is, I suddenly heard a sound coming from below, just behind me. Bright and clear in the brisk morning air, it was the unmistakable ping and rattle of metal skidding on pavement. :wha:

I made the turn, pulled over, and parked. I walked back and discovered that it was just the license plate holder that had fallen off. :whew: The rivets holding it on had both broken, and gravity did the rest.

My scoot is registered as a moped (with a sticker), so I don't actually have a plate on it. The only real function this thing serves is to hold the two side reflectors, but that's important enough that I need to reattach it. Maybe a couple screws will work.

Glad it wasn't anything vital! Sounds like you kept your cool well. 8)

I sometimes get spooked by or worried about noises that eventually turn out to be coming from nearby cars.

Ditto, especially cars with a slipping belt, it still gets to me and it takes me a moment to realize I do not have a belt to make that kind of noise to begin with :P

I HATE that feeling. Whenever I hear something out of the ordinary, I start to run down checklists in my head. It's almost always from someone else.

I was on the way to work on the freeway on one of my MP3s a couple months ago and felt something brush by my leg.

I had a sinking feeling, and yep, when I got to work I found out it was my card access badge that I thought was .

Nothing's more fun than being next to a fully-loaded dump truck when it starts to jake-brake. A true 5-star, soiled-shorts experience.

I often have the opposite experience with my car: I hear some horrible noise that turns out not to be the junker in front of me at a stoplight, but continues even after he's no longer around. :(

Unfortunately I was unable to find the self-sealing stem bolts that I wanted to use to fix this. Fortunately I've been saving a pack of leftover rivets and a fastener since I used them for a project in art school, and now I've finally figured out why.

Fixed!

And yes, I'm actually looking forward to renewing my $15 registration this year, so I can finally replace this disintegrating three-year-old "moped" sticker. I don't know what this year's color is going to be though, so I'm a little nervous that it'll clash. When it was new, it was a near-perfect match to the red panels on the scoot.
