Maybe I should get an extra chain for my Dobby, now that the rest of the world is about to find out how much fun it is to own a "moped".
But why do I suddenly feel so old?

Should be good publicity for Genuine. Lotsa pics and the bikes were prominently displayed in most.

Funny that the word "moped" sticks harder than "scooter." And you'd think a British publication would know better.

Great role models for new riders! It's good to see that the actresses are appropriately geared up in shorts and tank tops! And I know those beanie helmets will work great, especially unbuckled.

I actually cringe when I see riders without protective gear on a warm day. I can still see my youngest son after a skateboard accident. He went down on his longboard on a hill. Flesh scraped down to muscle on his elbow and hip. It took weeks of daily dressing changes with specialized gauze. I had to glove up and irrigate the wounds with sterile saline, so as to avoid infection. And, he was not going as fast as you would normally travel on a scooter.

Perhaps worst of all about the story, was that they called them mopeds!

I think the publicists may have had a hand in that. The photos suggest as much and wearing full gear wouldn't have been as sexy.

AAAGH! when I read that my brain nearly leaked out my nose.

1) MOPED? do you see any F"N pedals on it?

2) those people have as much biz riding a scooter as I do refining plutonium.

3) I would love for Genuine to get more biz, but if the Twilight crowd all buy scooters, I'm going to flip out.

C'mon folks, look at the positives! I'm sure the public can learn to substitute "scooter" for "moped", especially with more exposure.

And having celebrities on your product is the proven way to get attention.

Maybe I'm not picky, but I didn't see any abs I thought objectionable.

To paraphrase the biker-bar dude in 'Sister Act': If this turns into a vampire forum, I'm outta here.

Nice PR opportunity, though. That's the problem with celebrity bike pseudo-endorsements - the gear would cover up the celebrity.

Is it wrong that I'm trying to look on the bright side of one of these "celebrities" pulling a Regis and eating pavement with a bunch of TMZ paparazzo clicking away?

I didn't bother to read the article, just looked at the pictures while at trivia night last night, got in trouble for being on my phone, showed the trivia guy what I was looking at, he said "ooh, nice, but MOPED? REALLY!?" and walked away.
The lack of gear is saddening, because you know all the little teeny boppers are going to see this, want a scooter, mommy and daddy will buy them one, and they are going to mangle/kill themselves on it. Then "scootering is super dangerous look at all these kids that were disfigured/died in crashes" is going to be the new thing that your friends and family are going tp tell you, to try to get you to change your mind.

Wearing a half helmet with the strap unfastened is one the most pointlessly stupid things possible: all the nuisance, none of the benefit. I see kids on bikes doing it all the time and I just want to grab them and shake some sense into them. But I'm not prepared to do the jail time. :)

But as for calling these "mopeds"... lighten up a bit. OK, they obviously aren't mopeds, because they don't have pedals. But that's how these scoots are legally classified in a lot of places, and... the protests come across as either insecure or condescending. I have a sticker on my scoot that reads "moped" and it doesn't bother me. It's like, my ancestors lived in the Netherlands, and if someone refers to me as German or Belgian, I'll correct them, but I don't get my panties in a bunch over it.

We should be so lucky as to have people with more money than sense to buy things and then mangle themselves and their children on it...

OK, I'll quit being captain negative. it's been a trying couple of days!

Anyway, maybe we can just watch that segment of the movie with the sound off?

The funny thing is, if they fall, it's unlikely the knee pads will help much. In the times I have fallen--once in a wreck from someone pulling out in front of me, and the other two times from a stand still, just being stupidly inattentive (both of those on 250 and 400cc bikes), the shoulder pads of my armored jacket and (in the wreck) the face area of my helmet took the brunt of the impact. Only in the wreck did one of my knees ever even get slight road rash.

In a bigger impact, the knee pads probably would help much either, though I'm certainly not disparaging armored pants.

just an observation on lack of proper safety gear...

I got started riding last summer and attended my first scooter rally ever (the name of the venue, event, and associated club being left out for privacy); the use of proper gear was used by @ 65% of the group I rode with for one of the planned rides; at one point I was amidst several riders just wearing brain buckets & thought I was overdressed with jeans, armored jacket, gloves, and brain bucket; one of the safety 'blocker' riders seemed to have audited and it was announced that everyone wore helmets...guess I'm just used to wearing a jacket, gloves, long pants, and helmet as a minimum

I might also add that although I wisely keep my butt covered, I'm not totally ATGATT myself. Although I always wear a full face, jeans and boots, it's only in recent years that I've begun wearing an armored jacket. I don't have armored pants yet.

That's good. So your scooter's specs could be Smiles per hour or Smiles
per gallon. How many miles a year do you usually log? The season is finally warming up so in a few more weeks hopefully will be getting the scooter out of long storage and hopefully running. Could use the Prozac feeling as well.

Over the past three years I've averaged 4500 miles/year. That's with about three months off each year due to winter (less than that this year) and about 1200 miles each year on a big road-trip.

I'm guilty too, half helmet, jeans and boots. I'm still debating a mesh armored jacket for this season, but I don't think it's going to happen; I've gone too many years riding without serious gear, I suppose. I do have two armored textile jackets and one leather motorcycle jacket, all of various weight and ventilation, that I wear when it's cooler out. I also have a modular FF and a 3/4 with a face shield, but when it's hot and unreasonably humid the larger and thicker the gear, the more miserable riding becomes (especially with all the stop and go on my way to work).

Down here in the Deep South, it gets nasty hot in the summer due to the humidity and the lack of winds. I have a black mesh jacket and even with the liner removed, it's only tolerable when moving. Then again, I have a full fairing.

I will have to see if I can find something with a looser mesh and not black to see if that will improve things. Otherwise, when it gets hot enough, I will be down to a T-shirt for my homeward commute.

One of the few reasons I find it odd that most motorcycle gear is black. It soaks up the sun and gets hot as hell in the summer! (In addition to not being very visible.)
The mesh jacket I'm looking at is probably 75% black, and 25% pink (or grey) and reflective piping, which is why I'm still debating getting it. The mesh might be nice and cool, and there are people from some of the desert states that swear by it in their reviews, but I feel like if you are anywhere with humidity you will be a melted blob of goo by the time you get anywhere.
Also, would one end up with a polka-dot tan after wearing a mesh jacket in the sun all day? I had bad backpack stripe and tank top tan from a few trips last summer, and that bugged me, idk how I would feel if I ended up being polka-dotted.

Posted: Mon Mar 05, 2012 11:46 pm
by Southerner
I don't think it's likely you would become polka-dotted unless you spent a lot of time wearing it standing still. I've gotten sunburn while riding but that was bare arms and neck completely exposed. In any case, the mesh on the jacket I have, doesn't have holes big enough to make something like that likely.

The worst is when they call scooters mopeds, and turn right around and call mopeds scooters... and then tell YOU that you don't know what you're talking about because everyone in Italy rides mopeds and they call them mopeds over there. Did you know that? Every single person in Italy rides a moped. They all ride Vespas and every Vespa is a moped. Yep! :fp:
I imagine them all riding Ciaos and Grandes. Augh! C'mon, it's not a hard concept.

viney266 wrote:with modern mesh jackets in cool bright colours and under $150 ( sometimes way under)...
I have yet to encounter such an animal.
All of the lighter colored women's mesh jackets that I have found are 'spensive, and I'd like to keep it under $100 if I can. The black and pink or black and grey one that I found is about $70, which is okay, but I don't know how often I would end up wearing it anyway. When the new stuff for this year comes out, if I can find one like this in an armored mesh jacket I might go for it, and I do absolutely LOVE this one but like I said, it's expensive-ish, maybe I'll buy it after my birthday in the beginning of June. Between motorcycle-superstore and leatherup I have found a grand total 3 women's mesh jackets under $100, and I think 6 or 7 between $100 and $150. and most of them are at least 50% black, but there are a few better color choices at motorcycle-superstore.... So I'm really keeping an eye out for new stuff there.

In my opinion it's a toss up between being visible and being protected. If you're super visible and aware of your surroundings you may not need so much protection, but if you're NOT visible (and distracted), it is more likely that something will happen that would require protection. BUT there are idiots out there that no-matter how visible you are, they will plow right through you and insist they didn't see you, and your skinless elbows will make you wish you wore a jacket that day.

ANYWHO.
About the knee pads... I'm sure someone somewhere said "hey, there are people on these mopeds out there that wear some serious gear, I've seen them around LA, and they will probably not be happy to see this girl with her ass hanging out in a skimpy tank top riding around on the same moped they use daily. Lets make sure she has a helmet and some small type of armored something on her, just to make those silly moped people happy... and to suggest to kids out there that see these pictures that it's a good idea to wear some kind of gear if you're going to ride around mostly naked." :fp:
Obviously it didn't work for us because we're not a bunch of dummies, but I would be willing to bet that after this show or movie or whatever comes out you will see little teeny-boppers riding around dressed and "geared up" quite similarly.[/url]

I really dislike wearing my Prima jacket sometimes but an armored jacket with padding was part of the deal with the missus when I got my scooter.

The biggest paradox of hipsterdom is that once something is hip and acknowledged as such, it's immediately unhip. The only way to achieve hipness is by being un-self-consciously unhip. So you might actually be hip. But the second you realize it, you're not.

The cool kids would wear the dork shirt because they think it's "ironic." But, much like hipness, the only way for something to be truly ironic is if you don't know what's actually happening.

I merely observe.

True! You can only speculate as to the probability of the location of a hipster trend. Once observed, you've altered its state. Next thing you know, there are Chevy SUVs in the San Fernando Valley with giant handlebar mustache decals on their grills. (Yes, I have observed this.)

If there is indeed a mesh jacket no hotter than a T-shirt, I will certainly buy one, if not ridiculously expensive. That being said, although I'm wearing armor whenever I can, I don't have a lot of confidence in it other than that it's certainly better than nothing. I have more confidence in my helmet and boots.

About the helmet straps, one commenter under the article seems to think the unstrapped shots were posed and still but it still sends a bad message.

And I don't think this will result in hordes of young girls rushing out to buy scooters.
