Tire valve question

While inflating tires after taking my bike out of hibernation I noticed that rear valve cap was sort of reaching a certain point, than spinning again. I guess the replacement is needed? It is not comming off by any means but I do not know what would be the consequences if it did. Would the tire deflate? Do regular auto places carry those caps?

That's nothing to be too concerned about. Your tire won't deflate without it. You should be able to get a new cap at any auto store, or even at a bike store.

Yeah, the cap is just there to protect the valve from corrosion and debris, not to hold the air in.

Heck, you might even be able to get a replacement by going into any place that repairs bikes/motorcycles/cars, smiling

, and asking if they have any spares lying around. Or help yourself in any parking lot.

There's one remaining chain of gas stations here (QuikTrip) that still offers free air, thus they get a lot of traffic at the air pump. There are usually two or three valve stem caps lying on the ground for the taking.

The valve stem cap if plastic may have just stripped the threads. You can pick up replacements and many stores or a place like Costco tire center may just give you a set. You want to keep dirt, water etc from getting into the valve since over time especially if temp drops below freezing could cause the tire pressure to lower. Some caps are plastic or metal so do not know which your tires had. As a side note finally got my scooter out of long hibernation and got it started just going around the block gave a Prozac dose.
