Modern Buddy

So, a few weeks ago my right mirror went wonky. My local shop swapped me a new one under warranty and was happy to do so.

Then, when I got in my small accident, it was torn up. Again, I got a new one.

Now, I was trying to change the angle, and realized I needed to move it closer. I moved it around, remembering the reverse thread. it wasn't sitting quite right, so I started to remove it. Figured I'd just rethread it right.
well, it got stuck, and snapped that bugger right off!

I gave up and ordered the pair and some patches from scooterworks (must be the suggestive advertising up on the right...).

Anyone have any good tips for removing that bit of leftover thread?

my mother's BJ is going on its 4th right mirror in under 1,000m. the first one had that loosey goosey dangle thing going on. the next one bent at the base while tightening it, and the one now? its loosey goosey again!

i have an offer in for a right for $15 in the MB sales forum. just as an easy temp. but as soon as i get time i am going to scour the "aftermarket mirrors" thread here like mad and get something better!!

If there any sticking out? If so, some locking pliers or a vise will help turn it out.

If not, you may have to use a drill to extract it. Most extractors are "left hand" bits that drill in, grab the bolt and turn it so it comes out via the existing threads. For this reverse-threaded one, I think a standard twist bit will do.

You'll want a very strong one (made for drilling metal) and not too wide, less than half the width of the bolt, but not so thin it'll snap.

You can break off a drill bit doing this. (By which I mean, I have broken bits doing this!) Then it's a mess, because nothing will drill into that drill bit.

Mirrors loosening can be fixed easily. It is a pretty standard thing. Just remove the glass and re-tighten the nut behind it. It takes about 5 minutes.

i had no idea Mike just replaces them, it seems. saw a guy ride up to the shop a couple weeks ago, brand new Italia, exact same deal. Mike tossed him a new one. but this is great news. hopefully it will hold so i don't have to fiddle often before the new ones come in. i think shorter ones that stick out a bit more might be good

Good luck. Try what Eric said. You can't use a normal easy-out on that side but you could dry drilling down a pilot hole with a really strong bit and then try a sheet metal screw (using a drill).

I had the same thing happened and tried everything. The hardened steel of the leftover mirror stem just would not come out of the aluminum casting of the socket. Finally, I ordered part 13 from this diagram (scooterloungeonline). It's the front half of the RH grip assembly (where the mirror goes into).

It was about $15 shipped and way easier to replace than getting that damn thing out!! Getting the halves lined up and the throttle cable seated in there was a little tedious (as is getting a driver to reach the screws that hold it together) but not terribly bad.

You may be able to get it out but if it's cross threaded it will be tough. I also suck at this kind of repair though so it may be easy for you! But if you don't want to mess with it, that part is your answer.

Ya, Mike has a big box of wobbly mirrors. It is really common. I have to tighten mine about once every 6 months. You can also put some locktight on there to make it last longer. The good news is that with each time you push the rubber back to retighten it, it gets easier and easier to work with. I can push it back with just my thumbnail now. It only takes me a couple of minutes to do the fix.

eh. the local shop said they were pretty much hard to get at the moment. I ordered the pair, and figure I'll get one in there once I figure out how to get the leftovers out. there's a TINY amount of thread sticking out, but it may be easier to disassemble it and just twist it out from underneath. I just can't believe how doomed it is . It would have been fine if I hadn't tried to push the cross-thread.
