I just got a 170I and it has 1400 miles on it but now when it idles it sounds like a panting dog. Today I was riding and lost all power and now this strange grrr, grrr, grrr sound when I come to a stop. Has anyone else had this problem? If so does anyone know what could be wrong cos it wasn't making that sound before? Good thing it still under warranty!

In the 3000 miles that my 170 lived I never had a problem like that. Definitely take it to your dealer since it's still under warranty!!

Forum is most likely slow because of the holiday weekend, 'pro. So no reponse yet. I am sure someone will get to your question. Until then I will give this a little bump so others might see it
Sounds minor. Most likely will take care of it under warranty. I have read of an ecu issue with some of these causing the scooter to think it is overheating. The scoot then goes into a sort of "limp mode" and won't go much fast. I don't know if this is a still occurring issue and taken care of "case to case" or if all bikes have been fixed before purchase? But this is just what I have read, as I haven't a 170i, myself.
Good luck with it. I am sure it's nothing to worry over too much.

If he was having the CEL issue it would have presented itself many many miles ago. Most of the new 170is already have the new flash in their ECUs, only the first batch or two with the CEL issue don't have it, and should be taken in to their dealer for it. But it's definitely something the OP would have had a problem with right off the rip.
This sounds similar to the problem that 2WheelInsanity was having a few weeks ago, idk if he ever figured out what the problem was though.
I say just take it to a dealer, that's what the warranty is for.
Luna, do you remember what # your scoot was?

I have the VIN number on paperwork still, but if you're referring to any other number I'd have to make Lokky go down and look at her skeleton
If it was the CEL problem, wouldn't it have presented itself with an engine light, been triggered by WOT or near-WOT riding and been reset by a restart?

The # I'm talking about is on the Genuine "date of birth" sticker, it's the # of the bike from the manufacturer. The Psychos and BlackJacks have a special number plate, but all of the other ones have their number included on the DOB sticker. Mine is 469, and I have yet to encounter any kind of problem.
The CEL problem, yes, and the WOT would had to have been for a few minutes too. It shouldn't present as low idle and sudden loss of power while riding
without the CEL popping on.

It's the riveted on panel on the "glove box," but now that I just looked at it, at least for mine, it's the same number as the last few digits of the VIN. My last six digits are 000469, go figure.

At first I thought I ran outta gas but looked and I still had some. It'll start now but has a weird idle sound now. Funny thing is I wasn't riding WOT. I lost all power and had to pull over. Thank god I wasn't on a main street. Then it wouldn't start. Not even the engine light came on for a warning. It would turn over like it wanted to but nothing. So I pushed it the 2 miles home from the store, added more fuel, (I was low anyways), then this putt, putt, grrr, putt, putt, grrr sound. "Not the sound it usually makes", I thought. Now It starts right up but that sound is still there at idle. I just don't wanna have to take it all the way to North Hollywood, cos I can't be bothered about renting a truck and driving the pass and hour and half. The good news is that I've managed to save over half towards a Stella.

(gotta look on the bright side!!!)

New bike but I am going to take a wild guess and say it sounds like it could be valve (adjustment) related. Anyone think the symptoms line up with that? Can valves go out of adjustment all of a sudden, or maybe need adjusting after break in?
How about an exhaust leak of some kind?

I would invoke the roadside assistance. even if they don't get it ALL the way to your dealer, it should cover the majority of the trip, esp. if it's a warranty issue!

Sorry to hear about your problem. I too have a problem with my scoot but it seems minor in comparision, when I get to 50-55 bmph the scoot kinda bogs down (feels like a grinding issue in the transmission) Others think it may be computer related, but I think it is something mechanical. However, I am unable to get my scooter to the dealer to find out which. Like you I would have to rent a truck and trailer to get it there (110 miles away). Good luck

Isn't their purpose to get it to the nearest certified dealer? I'd be mad if I had a warranty issue and they didn't get it all the way there.

My VIN# is ...061. So does that mean it was the 61st 170i built?

from the sounds you describe. Check for a loose spark plug! or a hose off somewhere. Such as emissions

Couldn't he chance voiding his warranty if he messes around too much in it?

I'm not gonna mess with it and just take it to NoHo scooter shop and have them fix it. Since I have to go down anyway to pick up my bi-polar sisters car, might as well kill two birds with one stone. Hate it when she in those depressive phases...

I don't know if they have it separated some way or another, maybe by color, maybe not. But it's possible.
What the owner at the Burlington shop said to me, when I asked about the CEL and other ECU related problems straight from the factory, was "Well, you've got number 469, see right there? I would say they (Genuine) had all of those problems pretty well sorted out by the time this one was built. If you had a much lower number I would tell you to keep an eye on it... just like anything new, there were kinks that needed to be sorted out with these scooters, that's why I have just started stocking them here this year... But if you do run into any problems, we're not going anywhere, and warranty work isn't going to cost you anything, so no worries! Plus I'd be happy to see you guys again to talk bikes and scooters!"
And 2Wheel, I don't have a decent Genuine scooter shop within 200 miles. But if my scooter was giving me problems that I couldn't figure out myself you could bet a million bucks that I would rent a truck for a day and haul it up to Burlington. I wouldn't want to risk further damage, and would rather have a professional take a look, even if it was going to cost me $50 for the truck, and other ridiculous amounts in gas to get it there. The $150 (or more) would be well worth keeping my $4,76X.XX investment in tip top condition.

No money, haven't found a job yet since getting my masters. The problem occurs at around 55bmph, so I do my best to keep it below that. Plus, I've been driving the "cage" more lately.

Trust me, I understand not having money. I think I have $4 left for the rest of the week right now (not including savings that I only put money into and credit available on a couple of cards that I don't actually use).
I'm glad to hear that you're doing what you can to keep the scoot from eating itself alive though. I hope you can get the issue with it figured out sooner rather than later though.

I'm taking it down to NoHo on Sat. When I talked to Mike and told him of the symptoms, he seemed to think it may be a ecu or a throttle problem. Hopefully it will be sorted the same day.
