Just another robbery, but someone who didn't intend to be a victim. What is truly sickening are the racist comments to the article. It's amazing how many bigots and hillbillies populate online when they think they can get away with being anonymous

It's people like that who give others a bad name. I don't believe that the shop keeper would be charged cos the perp had the gun and was attempting grand theft which was caught on tape as clear as day. What an idiot. The perp most likely is gonna get caught with a list of felonies and deserves everything he gets.

Not just hillbillies. Read the comments on any news site anywhere that isn't closely monitored and heavily moderated, and you'll see the same garbage. I used to think that the "letters to the editor" page of our local newspaper was full of idiotic rants... now I miss it.

Hind sight is 20/20. But, once the guy trying to steal the bike shot at him; The shirtless should have killed him on the spot.

Up till that point it was a confrontation. I wonder if the guy got the gun out of the truck?

And the kids gun looked really odd, too. The really strange thing was that shirtless guy didn't seem to be afraid of the gun at all. so odd.

Which really is my main argument against the usefulness of guns as a form of protection, how many people would have stayed calm enough to asses the situation and decide against going for their gun?

I'd like to think I would. Most criminals just aren't that bright. THEY are dishonest, but expect that YOU are going to be honest...and cowed.

I remember when I was 18 years old, I was working at a gas station that had a locked glass room where I sat on a stool, took money for the gas and sold cigarettes. I had a guy walk up to the bullet proof window where I collected money and wanted me to give him all the money in the register (while he was pointing his gun at me). Well, I knew that the register was full of cash, but I wasn't about to give in to the creep. I said "I just dropped all the money into the floor safe". His reply was "well give me a pack of cigarettes then".

Not the brightest of bulbs.

This guy, however, takes the cake. I wonder if he was on something or what? I just can't fathom someone threatening someone's life for a scooter....especially with witnesses hanging around.

The guy had multiple opportunities to draw. The crook was looking away constantly and totally absorbed with trying to steal the scooter. If the guy had any training at all, he could have ended it quick. I'll bet the guy NEVER trains.

Agreed. The guy had plenty of time to draw. The reality is that none of these guys had a clue how to handle themselves.

What I see though is the same issue I deal with a couple times a week. People who can't decide what is important now making bad decisions that compund equally bad decisions.

Any time you are using force to defend property you are on pretty shakey ground legally. If this had happened in my jurisdiction the theif would be going to jail for all the obvious crap, but the shop keeper would be going to for assault 1. Shooting at someone who was trying to steal something as they are fleeing is almost always inviting arrest. Once they turn tail and run the threat is over.

This is all still skirting the bigger issue: Who the hell wants to die over a scooter?!

I like all the hate. It shows just how far away we truly are from the "feel good" world that is depicted on TV and other media. I know the world is filled with selfish, hate mongering swine, because I see them every day, and have experienced it on too many occasions to count, and it's just not white people who are racist. Racism is alive and well, and it's even worse out side of the US. We're actually more attuned to race because of our co-existence with other races on a daily basis.

No, what's sad is people not facing up to the reality of the world they're living in. Lalalalling their way through their sad little lives while the truth of racism plays out around them every day. I think one can understand the reality without 'liking' it.

Last October I was the victim of the latest craze, the "Knockout King" . Here I am, a 56 year-old guy (205 lbs) minding his own business, walking downtown in San Jose, CA in broad daylight, about 4 pm, when a young man in his late teens (6' 1, 175 lbs) accosted me while I was walking, after parking my car to meet my wife in the local wine tasting shop. He distracted me by saying I had called him something, I replied I hadn't, took my eyes off of him, turned to walk away and found myself waking up on the sidewalk, face down. Totally unconscious, right cheek caved in which hasn't healed, and is probably permanent. Bruises on my back which couldn't be explained, unless I was stomped upon. Never saw it coming, but had his sucker punch been an inch closer to my temple, I would be dead. An older gentleman came to my aid and helped me to my feet, but I had suffered an concussion, and my memory at this point was somewhat blurry. A witness at the scene stated the perpetrator ran down the street and jumped into a vehicle driven away by someone else, and they drove off immediately, so I feel this incident was premeditated. Called the police at the wine shop to file a report but after 30 minutes no police had showed up, so the emergency nurse I phoned at Kaiser filed for me. There are evil people about, folks. Keep your eyes open. Be aware of your surroundings.

That's a terrible story tenchi. Heal up. I was once cold-cocked when I looked away. Cowards. They have to cheap shot you to be a man? Evil people abound.

That is such a terrible thing to happen to you, I can't imagine. The knockout game has made the news here in St. Louis too, at least one fatality from it. I don't understand how anyone could do that for kicks. But we seem to be living in a society that has little empathy for others and I often just plain cruel. I think that is one reason why I like scootering so much and why I enjoy this board. It seems to attract a different kind of person and I find it very refreshing.

Its just a scooter. My life is more valuable - I'd not confront the kid.

They had a truck right there...could have jumped in and followed the thief while calling 911.

Its really scary to think what the future holds with people doing things like this...
