Transmission rattling sound after derestricting

Hi All

Just wanted to introduce myself - just bought a used roughhouse 50 with about 600 miles on it for $1100. Had some cosmetic damage, broken speedo, broken turn light, broken plastic piece, only 1 key and dead battery. After all was fixed up we were around $1300.

I went ahead and derestricted it thanks to all the great information on this site. Really helpful, thanks. Got the exhaust gasket off and put the new one on, and pulled out that little ring on the cvt. Got the damn 14mm nut on the variator off with an impulse driver; took all of 2 seconds to come off after struggling for hours with all kinds of tools and wrenches

BUT NOW I have this really loud rattling coming from the transmission case during idle. The bike runs great otherwise, no other strange noises, just during idle the cvt case is rattling away loudly. Any thoughts?

Take it back apart and do it again. It shouldn't be rattling.

You may not have gotten the nut fully seated.

Roller weights are not in right, and are probably now chewed up. I did the same thing. I know I put them in right but in tightening they must've turned. Had to have the shop re-do it and they had to replace my brand new weights. :

hmm well I was derestricting only so all I removed/touched was the plastic piece up front with the fan blades. I even made sure to keep the scooter angled slightly to the right so nothing would tend to slide off. Couldn't find my 8mm and the local hardware store is closed for the night so gonna take the cover back off in the morning.

What were you doing that the weights came lose? If you were just derestrciting that worries me, but I'd rather not go to the shop as they said its $75 just to look at it.

Not necessarily but quite possibly the rollers. Did you also pull the clutch?

Best to use a torque wrench when replacing the variator nut. Get it just right.

Pulling open the variator, even just the outer pulley, might be enough to let the rollers get a bit askew in there.

But… Nothing to do but crack it open and make sure everything is in place and tightened down properly.

shame on me I didnt use a torque wrench as I dont have a means of holding the variator from spinning. I just tightened it down with the impact after googling for a while I'm fairly certain it came lose. will update tonight when I have the thing open thanks for the replies

viney nail on the head. spent a few good hours at work studying cvt transmissions. needed to get the belt nice and seated before tightening the nut on. good 20 minute test drive confirmed no rattling

Awesome.

There are various ways to spread the clutch to get the belt in there, but it's often some work, especially if you've got a stiffer performance spring in there! The belt can withstand a lot of pulling and tugging.
