Hi, the wife has a 2006 Buddy 50, 900 miles, no mods, been running fine and slowly became a bit sluggish. Put it away last fall thinking I'd go through it this spring.
Spring hit, pulled the carb and cleaned, drained fuel, new filter and auto cock and tossed in a new plug...no start. Long story short, replaced everything again, bike wouldn't start unless the air filter was off and then no real power. Swapped out the muffler too as it sounded plugged...no help but I did notice the tailpipe spewing oil/gas droplets. (the carb on there now is a working carb off another 50 of mine)
Any clues, suggestions, alien conspiracies?
Buddy 50, won't run with filter in, spewing oil out exhaust.

Several possibilities:
Blown or leaky gasket? Any fuel or oil leaking/dripping from elsewhere? How about when the scooter is run?
Vacuum/air restriction problem? That could conceivably force un-ignitied gas and oil into the exhaust from the engine and make the exhaust sound bad.
I'd start with checking all hoses and connections first, looking for leaks.
Are you removing just the air filter (and re-sealing the air box) or pulling the whole air box and leaving that off?

No fuel/oil leaks from anywhere else...just the exhaust...and it's kind of a splatter 18 inch diameter stipple pattern. Never saw that from a Buddy before.
Filter - I'm pulling the whole box off. With the filter in, it will occasionally start and idle for a minute, but it's very muffled and any throttle will kill it. With the air filter out it will kick right over and run with limited top end and sounds a bit like one of those 3-wheeled chinese ice cream buggies, without the cheesy music.
Carb - The one on the bike now is a known good, new and working carb off one of the other 50's. I've even gone so far as to use this carb, while feeding gas from the other bike just to rule out any tank/valve/carb/fuel problem.
I'm thinking I'm gonna have to crack the case open.
You know, I did try an adjustment to one of the previous carbs. The scoot acts like it's choking to death for air, so if I lean out the carb a bit while keeping the filter out, it actually perks up a bit but still won't run with the filter in place. It's like the intake is restricted...
Trust me, I know how weird this all sounds.

Check compression before splitting the cases. Do you have an idea of what it might be or would it just be exploratory surgery?
I would super clean the carb. Fully disassemble, soak overnight in carb cleaner, ultrasonic with simple green, spray down and reinstall. Fully check and clean the entire fuel system.
It sounds to me either fuel or electrical related.
