I took the plunge, and went for the elephant gun!

Post by Mutt the Hoople »

Okay. Now that I have had my Buddy 50 since February (and I love him), and meeting my inner scooterist-motorcyclist-it's-not-a-motorcycle-motorized-two-wheel-loving-demon, yes, pleased to meet you too, on my 50th birthday.... It didn't take me long to find out that I wanted a bigger fish bowl. I have explores every nook and cranny of 35mph St. Louis, and the 55mph roads beckon. Manuel needed a bigger friend. So after trying out:
1. SYM HD 200
2. SYM Wolf 150
3. Kymco People 150 and 200
4. Honda SH150i
I made my mind up and got a .............................

Vespa GTV 300.
I WHAT??????????????
I wanted bigger wheels you say. Yes, that is true.... I did
make that point, adamantly, several times in fact.
I did not need something that would go on an interstate. Yeah, well... Options are nice. I did not even mention Vespa. LOL. No I did not... Go figure. It's not logical. Is love EVER logical? Sometimes. I did marry an accountant... They are known to be logical... Very much so. It didn't last. So much for love and logic. So I'm having a spring fling at 50 with a younger Italian. Can ya blame me?

I tried all of those scooters out and I really wanted to feel the love... Like I did and do with my Buddy. With my Buddy I knew it the second I sat down on the seat. But all of those scooters, they were very nice... But plutonic. Except the Wolf... Loved it. I was trying to make an intelligent and logical choice and was giving the People 200 a second look and inquiring about the 300, when I met the enchanted scooter from across the crowded room... Show room. And somehow I knew... I knew even then.....???? Where was I????

Oh yeah. Okay, I'm a fickle woman and logic went straight out the window. I sat on it. I took it off the center stand and sat on it... I moved it around. Love. My heart went pitty-patter. I felt the love. I signed the paperwork.

As Pete H said, I went for the elephant gun. Blush, I did, didn't I
 So I will have my Buddy 50 and my Vespa GTV. I cook like that too... I have a great paring knife, and a great chef's knife... What else do I need.

So, I am now ready to be teased for doing the opposite of what I was going to do. Well... It DOES have big wheels. For a Vespa.

LOL sounds like you did the right thing there! I know that, after doing the 30 mph thing for almost five years, I had to move up. With my 170i I have found myself hitting the interstate, an exit at a time. So you are going to fly by me here in STL if you get so brave!

Congrats! Don't try to rationalize your Vespa purchase. You're preaching to the choir. :D I almost bought a white 300 gts because it matched my blue & white Corazzo jacket...AND I'M A GUY! Lol

Your gtv will do fine on the Interstate.

Lol. I plan on keeping my Buddy too.... It is so fun for zipping around town. The funny thing, when I was 30, (the first time, not the. We time), I never would have imagined in my wildest dreams that I would be tooling around on two wheels at 50. I... I.... I was an art major, in the early 1980s and I never inhaled! Really. I was so strait and well behaved LOL.

But I am happy with my choice. It just felt right. It was the feeling I was waiting for and up till then had eluded me. Maybe the same model but different scoot would have been completely different, but that was the one. It felt like it wanted to go home with me. And it IS a beautiful thing. Gosh this scooter thing is a slippery slope. Somehow I see a fleet in my future. Maybe not a fleet, but I'm hooked. I admit it.

congrats...it's a great machine & very costly in my area...they sell quickly so no discounts on leftovers!

I also wanted a larger scooter (than 125-150cc), but couldn't afford it so I got a used 2008 Buell Blast (500cc), but it was unruly to ride...still couldn't afford a larger displacement Piaggio/Vespa scooter so I traded it on a used 2009 Yamaha V Star 650 & loving it since...

Good for you! Definitely post pics.

Where do you get hung up with the process? Here are the steps I take:

1. If you take a picture using your phone, email it to yourself.
2. Open the email and save a copy of the picture to your harddrive (put it someplace where you can find it later).
3. Use a photo editor (I use Paint, but there are others) and reduce the size to 800 x ___ (800 being the larger of the two numbers).
4. Save the picture, making sure to save as a JPG and keeping the file size less than 200k.
5. Do a "Reply" in whatever link you want to post in.
6. Type a few words, then scroll down a bit to the "Add an attachment" section.
7. Click "Browse", go and find your image.
8. Follow the prompts to add your image, and click "Add Attachment"
9. Add a one liner comment, if desired.
10. Click "Preview" like you normally do.
11. Click "Submit".

If you used a camera instead of your phone, disregard the first step, and just save your picture to your computer, then follow the other steps.

I've had various larger scooters...though I started with, and have always kept and had a blast riding, at least one Buddy:
I've had a Yamaha Majesty 400, a MP3 250 and currently have a MP3 500.

I'm actually in the process of selling my MP3 500, and am considering a Vespa 300 (haven't really settled on which 300).

All 3 of the larger scooters I've had have been fun to ride, and the MP3s are real attention getters, but I guess I'm really more of a smaller scooter fan...smaller in physical size (length / height) not necessarily in cc's. All three of the scooters I've had, have been a bit unwieldy for my taste. I've been able to handle them just fine, but I just prefer something smaller...less room needed to store, more manueverable in tight areas, easier to handle in the wind. (I don't even consider riding the bigger scooters in the wind). I do have a need for freeway capability on occassion though, which is why I've been looking at the Vespa 300 now....maybe...after I sell the MP3 500.

We'll see. :)

I've gone through all these scooters since 2009, but it hasn't been too terribly expensive, as I typically trade up, or sell and then buy the next. Hassle? Maybe a bit, but I've been able to give each a good trial before deciding whether it was "the one". At least this is how I justify all these different scooters I've had in such a short period of time, in my mind.

Ah, an impulse buyer. One of those people that made the ShamWow, Slap Chop, etc., the marketing hits that they were. :D

And I have no room to talk .... I'm about as impulse as there is when it comes to my toys.

Anyway, congrats! You have a great scoot and I know you'll enjoy your extended range and riding options.

It is indeed a slippery slope. Started with a Buddy and now have GTS 250, Scarabeo 500, BV 500 and Sports City 250. Those Italians are seductive. We briefly had a Suzuki Burgman but it wasn't the same, not by a long shot and traded him in for a Beverly (BV).

Okay, we have two scoots for each rider in our ramily but what can I say they are spread out over 3 states so we can feel that love.

Enjoy your new GTV. The combination of a Buddy and a big Vespa can take you anywhere with fun and style.

Congratulations. A GTS/GTV Vespa is not something you need to justify around here. It is the ultimate traditional scooter and a sweet ride. If one calls to you, you are pretty well hooked  . Enjoy the summer and enjoy your new ride.

And regarding posting photos - the problem most have is that the photo files are too large. You need to downsize them with one or another editing program. I find the resizer in PowerToys for Windows to be the quickest and easist to use (also free  )

Right? Or upload them at tinypic or something which will resize the photos automatically. Then just copy / paste the mg code here and watch the magic happen :)

ROB!!!!! How could you compare a Sham-Wow to a scooter. You made Manuel weep. I'm taking him to Ted Drew's later to help him get over it. I suppose you would compare a 1937 Cord Phaeton to a Popiel Pocket Fisherman LOL! No. Not like that at all. Now if you had compared it to th array of guitars I have on my wall, (or shoes in my closet... I definitely have Imelda potential), fair enough I suppose. A other comment like that and a pox upon you... No, make that a Flow-bee.

Actually, I think I did pretty well price-wise. It is a 2009 that the owner of the Vespa place had, that they used as a demo. It actually has less
miles on it than my Buddy now has. It wasn't for sale when I was in there previously. I went back to look at the Kymco People 200, and the more I read up I was thinking the 300 which was putting me in a different price range. I never thought I could afford a GTV300 so I never even considered it. But the price for the one that I got/am getting was only a few hundred more than the People 300. At that point it was sort of a no-brainer. I came home to look up prices, saw that it was a good deal, (I did find one cheaper... Not that much cheaper, for sale in Florida). It has a one year warrenty, and I can get an extended warrenty. Then I looked up resale values on Vespas and Kymcos. I also read professional reviews as well as user reviews. I paid nowhere near the price of a 2012. LOL my scooter will be worth more than my car. According to the DMV, my Buddy is worth more than my car. I know I will love both of my two wheeled friends.

And Pete H... I will still be riding my little Red Pamplona in town... Waffles any time!

And thanks for the photo joading info. I do have a photobucket account but for some reason I haven't made it work yet. Will follow your instructions and give it a try again I've tried to get my own avatar up and nothing happens. I'm usually not too terrible at those things but lately I seem to be upload-challenged.

Good luck with your new addition. At least you will get a full season in. Getting hooked happens I am up to six vehicles 3 cars 3 scoots and think may have to downsize a little. Maxed out at this time for now. Take it slow and get used to the new one and enjoy and be safe.

:D Oooops, sorry. Obviously a very poor and thoughtless analogy on my part. And I have no idea who Ted Drew might be, but I'm assuming that's some sort of therapy, so here's to hoping that's effective.

And the truth be told, I once had a Popiel Pocket Fisherman. I kept in the trunk of my car just waiting for the opportunity to pull it out and use it ... and of course that never happened.

You'll have to post a picture of your guitar collection ... that would be interesting. The shoes ... no so much. :D

Yay!!! I did it. Okay, that's one shot. I don't have it home yet as I am getting it added to my insurence tomorrow, getting my M license... Hopefully tomorrow... The Missouri DMV is such a nightmare, getting a good cover and a disc lock to go with the cable lock. I live in a cool neighborhood in many ways but it is close... To close to some crime ridden areas. Not taking ANY chances. Hope Manuel isn't jealous... He need not be; the more the merrier.

And no name yet.

There's part of the collection... Three more in the closet. Vintage GoGo boots (they fit too), leather jacket signed by Ian Hunter, (Mott the Hoople, Cleveland Rocks).

I don't know about Amerivespa. I've been lurking around the Modern Vespa site and... I like the vibe here better. It's more fun. I think I'm a Buddy girl who happens to own a Vespa too. But I am trying to convince a friend to come here for a visit and to ride two up to the Lake of the Ozarks perhaps. We are talking about a trip to Memphis... But it would be a bit far for the first one. But we are talking a out a weekend of music in the fall, the Stax museum, Sun Records and of course Elvis. He's a Mott the Hoople/Ian Hunter fan as well and it will be 40 years this year when after a particularly great show, Ian Hunter and Joe Walsh sort of crashed Elvis' home... To be politely asked to leave by Elvis' maid Alberta. Ian then wrote the song "All The Way To Memphis". Lol. We do not plan on breaking in to Graceland though.

So, how does it compare to the Buddy so far as:
* Balance (does it have the same lower center of gravity?)
* Suspension (more or equivalent spring once you go over bumps)
* Rider seat height (do you flat foot your Buddy and is your new ride the same?)

Inquiring minds want to know.

Well... I can give you a more informed review when I get it home and spend some real time with it. But... First impressions are:

Nothing compares to a Buddy as far as ease of learning and riding. Genuine really got it right in making a simple to ride and ultra fun scooter. I love my Buddy so much I give it a pat every night when I take the dog out for one last tinkle.

But compared to the other scooters on my list:
Yes. It definitely has a low center of gravity which makes it feel less likely to fall over while pushing it. I'm not a big person, and I had no problem getting it on and off the center stand or maneuvering it around the other scooters. Which is good as I will have to maneuver it around parked cars to get it into the gate and back to my building next to my Buddy. It was def heavier, but didn't require any man-handling.

It seems well balanced. One of the reasons I had not considered a Vespa besides cost was I assumed a metal frame and metal parts would make it heavy and unwieldy. With the low center of gravity you don't feel it that much. I found it much easier than the HD200 for example. I also felt more comfortable sitting on it. It may be a bit lower, bIecause of the smaller wheels but not significantly. I am maybe a smidge over 5'3" so I cannot flat foot it on ANY of the larger scooters. But I could come closer to it with the Vespa, and again with the weight of it low, when I leaneLd it a little it did not feel like it could easily get away from me. The other larger wheeled scooters felt a bit more precarious. Again, my height, or more specifically lack of probably played into that. I will say that I was extremely surprised that the GTV felt so comfortable as just looking at it I would have assumed it would have been too big and unwieldy for me. It was very comfortable.

At slow speeds... At really slow speeds it is
not as nimble as the Buddy. But with a bit more speed it is fairly agile. It is not sluggish. It is very easy to turn and maneuver, but different... I guess the difference between a four-stroke and a two stroke. You are aware that there is more of it to move than the Buddy, but not in a bad way. Just different. I had a Mercedes wagon after I had been driving Hondas.... I was always aware of a certain heft when I accelerated from a stop light... And yet it wasn't slow... Just a different feeling. It actually had a better turning radius than my smaller Lexus. You just feel that there is more to it I guess.

As for the suspension... I did not have the one I am getting out on the road yet. I did ride a friend's GTS around some today. It has 12" wheels and they are fatter so between the suspension and the tires you don't feel the bumps like you do on a Buddy. I think the Buddy does very well for its size, and on reasonable roads it is just fine. However, Saint Louis has some appallingly bad roads, even in the affluent parts of town. Clayton Road, Delmar. Big Bend are HORRIBLE in spots... As is Gravois. South Kingshighway, Manchester... This city should be ashamed of itself. The heavier suspension and fatter wheels make a big difference. I assume maybe the large wheeled scooters are even better but after a point a huge hole is a huge hole. I had to get the wheels on my car re-aligned after a pothole litteraly popped open in front of me. No types of wheels or suspension is going to make that feel okay. However, the Vespa is nimble enough to swerve around it. It does not lean like a Buddy, but is very swerve-worthy.

Crap. My iPhone is really acting up tonight. I appologize for any typos I may have missed. Anyway, in a week or so I can probably give a more knowledgable review, but it felt the best out of the ones I tried.

Mazel Tov......
I am jealous!
After riding my Buddy three years I am enamored, nee, lusting, a GTV 300.....

As also mentioned above, some have stated the appraised values of their scooters exceeds that of their cars, I can relate as my car is 18 years old with over 210,000 miles. What I cannot justify is spending significantly more on a scoot than my first brand new car was......

Great choice, lovely color, ride it with a smile and in good health, yes Manuel will be jealous, I AM!!!! :P :P
Aging is mandatory, growing up is optional.
My kids call me 'crazy', I prefer 'Eccentric'.

 Ahem. Yes. Epic posts on an iPhone. Probably the reason they are epic. I can't see them in their entirety which makes editing them down next to impossible. Blame Charter, my Internet provider... Which does a lousy job of providing. Grrrr.

Lol. My car. Snicker. It is a 2004 Sebring.... Wait for it... That I inherited from my mom, (with low mileage... It had 7,000 miles on it when I got it towards the end of 2010. Or wait, excuse me, the gas piggie was "gifted" to me. Then my brother's car crapped out, I lent it to him and I get it back 11 1/2 months later, (he gets upset with me when I say he had it for a year) with 14,000 more miles on the odometer. He devalued it by half, (not difficult to do with a Sebring). I planned on selling it to put a down payment on a Mini, but in the YEAR my brother had it it went from a value of about $7000 to phhhht. My Buddy is worth more. Crap, my 18 year old Lexus that needed work and had a Kevorkian exhaust system was worth more. Cough cough.

But the Vespa is a beautiful thing. I'm not sure I am worthy of such beauty LOL. I certainly don't look like the Vespanistas I see in these parts. And it is pretty awesomely maxed out. The person who had it spared no expense and I benefitted from it. Don't be jealous. Life seldom works like that for me. The last couple of years have been terrible. I got through it and now this gorgeous machine sort of fell in my lap. Thank you powers that be. I can now see exactly four lines of this post. I'll click the send button and then I will think... Oh oh. It didn't look that long.

EVERYBODY needs one... Life would be so fun. If I was president, I'd make sure you all got a nice big tax refund for scootering because it saves our natural resources and its just so damn fun. A happy Nation is a Scootering Nation... Less money spent on gas means more money to spend on other things. Like scooter accessories. But alas. I am not president. I'm merely Empress of the Universe-Tsarina of the Galaxy, and Queen of the Potato People, but no one seems to take note of that. I don't get any respect. But I do have a scooter fit for Royalty! That is for sure. Don't be jealous. When I went to college in 1980, first time away from home, first time away from those dreadful high school cliques.... and all my friends told me that lots of people who were not popular in high school have a great time in college. My roommate looked like Lady Di. In fact, her dad was an Air Force officer and they had been stationed in England for years... She even had a slight accent. Guess who got all the dates. And in my heart of hearts, I know that even today, she still is not fat. She was actually very nice and understandably popular.

But thank you, it is a very beautiful scooter and I still can't believe it will be mine... Here with me, in a few days. I never saw this one comming. I have to go tell Manuel that he will soon have a Sibling. Hope he doesn't give me the silent treatment.

I used to be Mr. "YES YOU SHOULD GET A SCOOTER!"

Now I'm Mr. "If you get a scooter and crash, don't let your parents/spouses/loved ones blame me for influencing you to get one!"

And sometimes Mr. "I know you well and you have no business on a scooter! I don't even trust you in a car!"

And occasionally, Mr. "Hell, yeah! I don't really know you but you should TOTALLY GET A SCOOTER. Get one for your kid, too!"

Good point(s). I have two friend's I won't get into a car with if they are doing the driving. I don't even want to be on the same road with them. One has had three accidents in one year and has no idea how that happened. They aren't bad people... Just spacially challenged and easily distracted. Guess we really don't need them in our scootering universe.

As for me... Since I still don't have that jet-pack that was promised to be in everyone's garage now... Or personal jet-port, (it said so in my dad's Popular Mechanics and Popular Science so many years ago... I found then in his basement drawer... On top of the Playboys), I will be happy armored up and scootering about. Driving was never this fun.
