Scooter As Accessory?

Hey, any scooter publicity is good publicity, right? Right! I think....

I saw this and it made me cringe, just a little. I don't know why? Maybe I don't feel the romance? Although with Buddy I do feel the love. But it has nothing to do with how many riders have rode my scooter before me.

Also, I have yet to feel warmth on my skin as I am usually covered head to toe, and the only thing I usually smell is exhaust, fumes from buses, and gutter sauce. Please, don't ask what gutter sauce is if you don't know already

Am I missing out on an important part of scooting? I want to be authentic.

Well, what you experience while riding depends where you ride. While riding in the city - I totally agree with you. The fumes. The stench... Countryside and side roads is a completely different though. It is very much as described in the video: nature smells and sounds, wind

Hmmm. Well, that was filmed in a rather charming part of a city. Looks a bit like the Oak Park Mall in Chicago or a bit like Charlottesville VA. There are some nice areas where I live. But the first thing I smell, especially now that the weather is warm, is what the neighbor's dogs have left in the yard as I walk my scooter to the gate. Phewph

It would take some really extraordinary coffee to get that smell out of my nostrils. But I live by the park, which is nice and has some lovely blooms, and the zoo that has some memorable fumes.

Wow, maybe it is the early heat, but the negativity here is overwhelming.

There is difference in the dynamic of driving a vintage bike versus a new scooter, but seriously I know what she is talking about. Even with city smells it is the connection to the surrounding outside space. As for feeling the warmth on your skin, even if you are covered absolutely head to toe, this is still a part of being on a bike, a sunny day feels different than a cloudy day, you can feel the warmth through the most armored jacket, never mind through the shield on one's helmet. This video summarizes one person's experience and love of riding. We are all part of one community, even if our experiences vary.

It's a Lammy! She's just so delighted it starts (and stays running, and shifts, and uh, stops, and starts again when hot). There's nothing like that sound, nothing. Tears to my eyes, it brings.

Lol. The early heat here IS overwhelming. We had our first heat advisory on Saturday. I took my helmet off and looked like I had just dumped a bucket of water over my head. Sorry if it sounded negative. At least for me it was meant more like, oh well, that's life in the city. Which for the most part is pretty fun.

I got behind a garbage truck Thursday and my first thought was to find a different route but I shook my head and said, "no, good or bad this comes with the territory". I should have turned. Damn that thing stunk!

Phew. I hear you. I got behind (temporarily thank goodness) something a bit more "farmy" than that on Hampton Ave. a couple of days ago. At least nothing flew out. Eek. Another good reason to wear a full face helmet... Bugs are bad enough.

I dunno...rather than gear up in hipster riding clothes, I wore my black undershirt (still on from early morning work shift) ratty shorts & my imitation airwalks to ride to best buy to use a gift card to buy a copy of Halo.

This ad is similar in spirit with those shaving razor ads that show rough tough guys and their rough tough women cruising on Harleys on a highway to blues music or kinda hard rock, while a Sam Elliot voice talks about freedom and the wind in your hair and riding smooth...riding smooth while lookin' smooth with the new Gillette razor.

They are selling a product by hoping people will want to identify with argyle sweater & goggle wearing scooter riders.

Nevertheless, those are nice scooters, and that would be a nice city area to ride thru. Does it make me want coffee? Nope...I want a Big Red!

(and uggh! nothing like behind a bus at a stoplight in 90 degree weather, with trucks and SUV's surrounding me...yep, that's summer city riding in Texas

)

I totally get the love of vintage machines. It reminds me of my younger riding days, even though that wasn't on scooters. I think if I'd been raised an urbanite, I would probably have had a scooter instead of a dirtbike.

But oh, a Lambretta! The bodywork, the stomp-down kickstarter. (I mean, does a small displacement bike really need electric start? The realization that this is a simple machine and I can fix anything on it, if need be. It's all good.

Yes, you can definitely feel the sun on your skin. It feels particularly good when the air is just a little bit too cool otherwise.

The smells are just part of it, good and bad. Out here, it can be honeysuckle and gardenias or a well-ripened armadillo squashed into the pavement, Or it could be the smell of the hot sun on the pine trees or a bahaia grass pasture. Or maybe somebody is cleaning a barn. Whatever.

The downside of vintage is, of course, the parts scarcity and the downtime that older machines often require.

I expect that the ideal combo for the scooter fan is one vintage and one modern daily driver. It's not like they take up a lot of garage space.[/i]

I regularly actually have to 'dodge' manure on the road it self, not just dealing with the aroma of "fresh country air"

The gal in that video is Jen from the Jaguars scooter club up here in Canada. I believe the video was shot in Vancouver, BC. I've met her once or twice at rallies. Nice girl, nice club.

The reason you're not feeling the romance is because the FIRST THING she talks about is her cool old scooter... not a PGO

Whether you wanted to or not, this thought probably popped into your head: Oh, so my newer scoot's not good enough, eh?? LOL!

Nah, but seriously... that's cool. To each their own. There are many reasons why I would prefer a new scooter to a vintage scooter, but she has different ideas about why she loves scootering than I do.

I love not driving my car, being out in the open, watching the road rush past me in a blur, and feeling alive. Romance? Maybe...
