Modern Buddy

Just a a quick question and possibly a stupid one, but I'm new so learning as i go.

I note that on the front of the Buddy there are blinkers under the handlebars that operate fine. However lower down on the front there are also what i assume to be more blinkers, as there are orange bulbs in them. However when i turn on the indicator or the hazards, neither trigger these to activate.

Are they decoration only or is this another thing for the dealer to investigate and repair?

As I understand it, they were the original blinkers but the DOT had it changed to the upper blinkers for safety reasons.

There are kits that you can buy that enable you to use the original ones in addition to the top blinkers.

they are on there for various country's that PGO/Genuine sells in. They use different laws on where the lights should be ect. So instead they just stick both sets on the bike and hook up whatever one is going to what market.

In most countries where this model is sold, those lights are hooked up to act as blinkers. However they don't meet US DOT specs for blinkers (not far enough part), so Genuine has PGO (the manufacturer) add the handlebar blinkers and wire those up instead. This leaves the standard blinkers dark, so they're nicknamed "deadlights".

It's not especially difficult to connect the deadlights to also work as blinkers. Hooking them up as running lights (on all the time) is possible as well, but puts more drain on the electrical system, so requires additional modifications (bulbs/battery).

I wonder if I get them hooked up by the dealer if it hurts the warranty. More flashing at a turn and caution could not be bad.

In Canada, PGO's also have rear blinkers added to the license plate bracket.

If you take the front cover off the wires to connect the "deadlights" are just sitting there.

if you use them instead of the DOT "lolipops" your lights will flash quickly. this can be solved by changing the bulbs on the "deadlights", or getting a different flasher unit.

I don't think that's true, as both the DOT lights and the body lights are incandescent - swapping one for the other _shouldn't_ affect the flasher unit's sensed resistance. However, changing the load (like maybe by switching to all LEDs front and rear) will require a new flasher unit.

Just take the front off and use a wire tap connector. The DOT and Dead Lights will both work. About $3 for connectors and wire

FYI if you just want to rip the DOT lights off and hook the deadlights up, it's a 5 minute job that requires no additional parts, and just a screwdriver to get the buddy front plate off. Unplug the dot lights, plug in the deadlights. Easy peasy.
