Modern Buddy

Hey gang, I know, it's been too long since I posted anything. Summer is here in Ohio and I've been riding to and from work whenever the weather allows which has been about everyday for the last few of weeks. Lovin' it!

I noticed with in the couple of weeks or so an extra rattly noise coming from the engine when I'm cruising or slowing. It lessens when accelerating. Any idea what it is? It's only the second summer I've had the scoot. I'm not an abusive rider. The trip to work is about 25 miles round trip on fairly flat and smooth city streets. I has almost 1700 miles on it. It had a normal servicing in April. Is this a normal scooter noise? Has anyone else experienced this? If I had to describe it, it's like there's a marble or a ball bearing rattling around in there somewhere.

I just thought I'd ask before taking'er down to POC to get checked out.

You should check your variator for sure. I had a strange rattle at one point and found it was the variator nut coming loose. Tightened it down (with locktite) and saved myself a $400+ service.

Ah thanks, but I'm not as mechanically inclined as I like to think I am. I have one year of warranty left. Unless you can tell me how to do that, I'm afraid I'm stuck takin' it in.

It's pretty simple to do when you have the right tools. That's the key though, you have to have the right tools. You would need an impact gun (either electric or air) to do the work. There's 8 or 9 bolts (8mm) covering the transmission case and a single phillips screw to undo the intake feed. From there it should be a 14mm impact wrench on the variator bolt.
