Foot peg project: Beta version :~)

Post by 2wheelNsanity »

Well after finally scoring some steel from a local machine shop I put my plan into action. This is only the beta version, after I build a shop table with a proper vise, get a drill press, and a wheel grinder I'll be able to make them proper. The plastic original foot rests will be installed in the original position (after some carefull sanding), covering most of the new bracket.
Second phase of the 2-up project is all ready underway, a seat extension that utilizes the three bolts which secure the rear rack. Pics when finished, Ineed to find a leather coat at the second-hand store cheap for the seat material.

Looks like a very promising start. I can't wait to see how they evolve.

Yes - looking good! Do you think there is any way to put the original piece back on there just to fill in the space and make it more finished looking?

That is a very nice solution for the passenger. You seem very inventive, so perhaps you can also come up with something for the rider. When you have stuff sitting on your floorboard, it would be really nice to have something way forward to put your feet on that is much like that--something that folds out of the way when not in use, but is there when needed.

The finished version will have the original plastic plates put back on over the steel bracket. I have to carefully sand/remove some material from the originals to fit over the bracket, thats todays project. Thanx for the support :D . I'll post update pics later.

Later will be in a few days, my drill broke :( (20years of good service + I found it, so it was free) need to get a new one, so I can't grind. I am working on the seat extension in the meantime so look for an update by Monday, promise :D .

Update with evrything in place. I need to paint the brackets and have a local machine shop make me a hat bracket to secure the seat extension. I tried to make one with just a vice and a hammer but no luck it was all messed up :D .

Those look beautiful! If someone were interested in buying the already made up metal pieces with the pegs how much would that cost? :D

Those look great. Could I get instructions on how you made them? I would really like to make some myself.

The steel is rusted. You should sand it off and give it several coats of primer and paint. Otherwise, good job!

My wife likes them. We tested them out and rode 30 miles and she said it was alot more comfortable with no leg fatigue. I will note that due to where I mounted them they can take normal foot preasure (a little more), but one can not put their full weight on them.
Also I am thinking of making another set and move the foot peg mounting point further to the rear.

This is an awesome job! Props to you, they look good and sturdy. Give us a 1 or 2000 mile report on them!

could they be made where the flip back toward the scoot -- like the kick start lever?

I like them a LOT. You did really good! Now to request them in black . . .
My kids comment how much easier it is to ride with the foot rest in place (but it is the huge Genuine one which makes my calves hurt when we are at a stop). They don't wiggle around at all when the foot rest is on and it seems much safer to me as the driver. I guess your pillion doesn't wiggle around too much!

Most excellent work! What is that KickStart thing I've been getting SO many emails about? Maybe something like this would qualify? THat would be cool! If you've got that kind of time, might be worth checking in to. :D

Very nice looking solution, 2wheelNsanity!

You might even want to take your bracket off, and take it in and have it chromed. It might make it a bit stronger, as well as looking really custom!

I did that with some tubular bumpers I had on an old Volkswagon Baja Bug I had a while back...turned out looking really nice! Then, I took a rear bumper for an old Datsun pick up in and had it galvonized. That worked pretty good as well...though the chrome certainly looks nicer. :)

All right...you can't just throw a comment like that out without explaining more what you are talking about. You know how curious we all are.

Kickstarter is the world's largest funding platform for creative projects.
You register a product and then get folks to pledge money for a piece of the pie . . . like I saw one that was some fancy key fob holder thing. If you pledged $20 you got a keyfob and a piece of candy. If you pledged $40 you got two key fobs and 6 pieces of candy . . . and on up. They may not use the word "pledged" but I cannot remember the wording now and I"m at work . . . so no looking it up. But , it seems like a cool place to get just such a project as these footpegs funded. I'd pledge for these!
I believe it is kickstarter dot com

Where do you take something to get galvanized? And how much did that bumper cost to get galvanized? I need something big galvanized (about twice the size of a bumper) and I don't know where to go or have any idea how much it'll cost.

Oh geez. Now you are making me think WAAAAYYY back (like mid to late 80s).

As I recall, it probably was a couple hundred dollars, but you'd need to check locally to see what they would charge these days. These guys obviously aren't local, but it will give you an idea of what to search for. :)
