Modern Buddy

I came within 6" of killing a cat on my Buddy this morning. I was traveling down a residential street at a little below the speed limit because they have speed bumps (another rant for another day). Suddenly I see this cat running out into the street right into my path. I hit the brakes and barely miss it. He continued running parallel with me for about 20ft.

So what happens if you run over a small critter. Do the eat pavement or eat the road kill ? Just kidding. Please no receipes please. Just kidding.

I'm an animal lover. But when riding, if it comes to riding thru or over a critter to keep myself from going down, then that's what I'll do. But it's never a pleasant choice by any standard....

On a MC I once rode thru two vicious German Shepards in NC. Their owner, who had been walking with them on a local backroad, shouted to me "keep going, keep going!!" Which you better believe I did, with the huge dogs snapping at my tires and legs! I managed to speed up enough to get past them without any of us getting hurt, but had to blow past an intersection without checking it first in order to do so!

Another time I rode thru a flock of squarking, fluttering, running chickens! I didn't feel any roll-over-them bumps, but I could swear there were feathers flying all over the place! I think they all made it to the other side of the road tho...

And lastly, I once hit a small rabbit when I was quickly approaching a blind hill in SC. It darted under my rear wheel, and that awful ~bump~ made me slow way down! And then as I came over the blind hill (much much slower!) there was a little child sitting in the middle of the road on one of those "big wheel" plastic trikes that are so *&$^%&* low to the ground you can hardly see them! If I hadn't of hit that rabbit.....?

I think if I hadn't hit that rabbit I could've gone down by trying to avoid running over that small child in the road! That little critter probably saved both the child and me that day...

I once witnessed a squirrel get caught in the rear spokes of a 10-year-old's bicycle during a race. The boy didn't know it was going to happen and couldn't prevent it...I'm not sure he even realized it until the crowd on the street went "ooooooooooooo". Fur everywhere!!! Kamakazi squirrels are hard to miss.

The other day I nearly hit one on my Buddy, and I flinched for a second and managed to miss him. But I've found you'll never know what you're going to do until you do it. I'll try to give animals a wide berth if possible but I certainly don't want to kill myself or someone else in the process.

i like to toot my stebel at them. they run away fast!

I say run over squirrels and don't look back. They have it in for us.
