Our local "Iron Butt" 2012 ride....

I hope to get some more pictures soon to post.

We set out @ 10am from one of our local shops, rode to Golden, Colorado. This is one I do fairly often and is really beautiful. From there we headed up to the foothills, much higher in elevation than scooters were probably designed to go. On the way down, we hit some dirt switchbacks that could best be described as 'harrowing' and 'pants-shitting". Then it was high speed twisties through the mountains, which was a little white knuckle but also really fun.

After a wrong turn, the ride ended up on a 55mph highway, which is fine since the 125 buddy was the smallest. we rode fast and hard back into town for cider.

Overall was 103 miles! We did stop for lunch and had opportunity for 2 fuel ups if needed. I left with 3/4 of a tank, topped off @ 1/3 of the way (first fuel stop) and now I have between 1/4 and 1/2 a tank left. Very impressive for a 'little plastic scooter...". In fact, a 125 stock and a 161 were up with our ride leader the whole time, while some of the bigger scoots held back until the highway part, where they just had to show off :P.

Nice!
Post some pics when you can.
I ended up working at the hospital from 8:30 til 2:30  .
I will be sure and get that weekend off next year!
I copied the course link from Google maps and may just do this one day soon.

Have you ridden the peak to peak Hwy? I've not, but from driving memory, I'd expect it to be a fun ride. We used to drive up to Allenspark for breakfast way back when; lots of nice two lanes in the foothills!

if you duplicate the route, make sure to share it with someone that you're going, etc. There are some hairy spots and cell service is not a guarantee in some of those valleys. I'd suggest a riding partner and/or a support vehicle. there are some unfriendly spots on the highways too, since people MUST go 20mph over the speed limit.

Here's a link to Velobuff's blog with condensed time-lapse goodness. I don't see a good and proper picture of the evil dirt switchbacks, but it certainly gives you the idea.

The wide angle of the GoPro camera seems to even out hairpin turns and steep grades :(

If anyone wants to do it again (or any other ride into the mountains) I'd be willing to met you in Golden (I'd take 93 down from Boulder).

If anyone wants to meet in Boulder or something, we could do a loop through Boulder Canyon to Nederland to Peak to Peak Highway, up to Allens/Estes Park and back through another canyon or something.

I'll definitely bring the route and a GPS this time :P
