top dead center without a kickstart

As a relative newbie, I've been trying to keep up with basic maintenance myself, and this forum has been terrific. I've coming up on 5,000 miles since I bought it last August.

So, I've had no trouble with motor and gear oil changes. The question is about valve adjustment when you don't have a kick-start to place the value to top dead center. It seems all the tutorials I've found use this handy trick, but how do you do this on a 170i?

Good point. I think maybe you'd need to take the CVT cover off and wrench the crankshaft around at the variator bolt. Anyone have a better tip?

Oh, and maybe you'd want to take the plug out so that you can turn the engine without compression, so as not to shift that bolt.

Can't you turn the flywheel?

Yeah, it would work from that side, too, wouldn't it? Which side has less junk to take off?

I have adjusted the valve lash on my scoot three times now, and yes you have to remove the CVT cover and turn the variator until you hit the marks. I figure I need to check my rollers and clean it out anyway, GL :D .

I'm trying to figure out how you guys in KS and TN are posting on July 4th right now when it's still the evening of the 3rd in a timezone later than yours.
