New Buddy owner -- a question

Hi,

I've done a search to see if I can find some info to help answer my question but I don't know that I found a satisfying answer. Perhaps some Buddy owners could help me out.

I actually don't think this is a 170i specific question, I bet any Buddy has similar answer.

It's about filling the gas tank.

I was told not to overfill the gas tank since the overflow would flow into a vent and mess things up.

When I remove the tank cap, I look and inside just about an inch below the top lip is a ring with some holes around it.

Last night I filled up and was really paranoid about how far to fill up, consequently I errored on the conservative side and drove away with the gauge indicating only 3/4 full.

- Is this ring with holes the point above which I should not add gas, or is there some point below it I should not fill past?
- Are those holes around the ring the vent holes?
- Anything more one should know about this?

That ring is the target for where to stop. You don't need to be super-paranoid about reaching it; just don't fill it to the point that it's "underwater". I think the other holes you're talking about are just vent holes into the tank, to provide a way out for the air during fueling if the main hole is filled by a fuel nozzle/funnel/whatever.

Yep - use that lower lip (with the holes) as a guide. The emissions canister hose attaches somewhere between that lower lip and the gas cap, so if you keep the average level down at that lip, you should avoid excessive amounts of gas getting in to the emissions canister (which does Bad Vacuum Things). If you blip in enough gas so that those little holes are awash, your fuel gauge _should_ read full.

Thanks, all. I will target future fill-ups to have gas level only up to the bottom side of the ring with holes.

That will also give you a semi-consistent target to shoot for if you're tracking your MPG.

SilverStreak and I had a recent lively discussion about fill accuracy, all in comradely good fellowship, so it may not be perfect, but it's at least a start towards a consistent fill-up level.

I do my best to fill it to that mark each time. filling scooters is sort of an art. My Kymco has a weird way of filling too that is totally different.
