I am sad to report that my Odometer and Speedometer stopped working last Friday while I was riding.

On Saturday, I tried to use the Roadside Service to get my scooter to the dealer (appx 40 miles away). After, 3 hours they sent a regular tow truck instead of a flatbed. 5 hours later I was told the first vendor was to able to help and they would have to find someone else. The second vendor was going to cost me $40 because it was over the $150 limit. I said "no."

Now, I have to wait till Tuesday (my dealer is closed Sunday and Monday) to try again.

I've been told it is probably a simple fix. I don't know if I should continue to try to get Roadside to pick-up my scooter and take it to the dealer.

Or should I find a lot person in Long Beach, CA and pay for the repair myself...

Any advice?

Why not just ride it to the dealer? The problem is either very simple (i.e. a loose cable) or will require a new speedo (i.e. a probable wait for the part). Either way, riding the scooter won't hurt anything.

The cable probably came loose. You can probably find someone local who can fix it in 2 minutes.

I'm still new to riding. So, riding that distant without a speedo makes me nerveous. My longest ride is usually about 7 miles.

Agree. Almost any motorcycle or scooter shop could quickly determine if the problem is a loose cable and tighten it for you. If that does not appear to be the problem, you definitely want to involve the dealer in a warranty repair (be sure he has a replacement speedo in stock before you have your scoot hauled 40 miles by a tow truck or a friend)

open the headset (dashboard where the speedometer is) as described in the headlamp bulb replacement thread.

lift it up and see if the cable has unscrewed itself from the back of the speedometer.

as for riding with no speedometer... just stay off major hwys and keep pace with the surrounding traffic.

You may have a tough time getting service anywhere on a Sunday, even at a motorcycle dealer. If you do try a MC dealer, it may help to find a Honda or Yamaha place that also sells scooters. You could also call Vespa Newport Beach, but same day service on a weekend is pretty unlikely.

I've got a Long Beach Motorsports which sells Vinos & Metropolitans. I wasn't sure if they would know how to work on by Buddy. They are not too far away from me. I could safely ride my scooter there.

My speedo cable came off during the first month. I ran it for 4 days before I got back to Motorsports. (BTW it is about a 15-20 minute to reconnect.) Just move with traffic you should be fine going back to your dealer. Call them ahead of time.
